Questions?? OS .18 TZ in 1/8th scale?

I have an OS .18tz and heard guys were getting killer fuel economy with the TZ in an 1/8th scale buggy. I am going to see what I can do with it in my Losi 8ight...

a couple questions though...

What gearing are guys running with this motor (clutch bell)?

What exhaust system will work on it since the exhaust outlet on the motor seems a lil smaller than a .21?

I will use a 4 shoe clutch on it, will the std 2 carbon and 2 aluminum shoe set-up be good?

Thanks!
Chris

Don't have any answers to your questions, just a first hand impression on an 1/8 scale running an 18tz.

Theres a guy that has one in his Hyper 8.5 That I race against here... That thing is FAST. Doesn't even lose anything on the straight. I think he qualified 2nd in the a main. I do know that he had to drill and tab his mounts to make it work.

i have seen it first hand. The driver easily beat the rest of the racers in pro 8th. It takes alot of mods to get it to work.

I have a motor mount for it already...

Kust wandering about the pipe, clutch, and gearing..

I know that thing is a super fast motor! Had it in my CRT .5 and it was silly!

ive never even heard of using anything under a .21 in a 1/8th scale and i dont think that it will have a killer fuel economy beacause it will need just that much more power to get the car moving

You have the wrong impression, an 18tz probably makes more power than the average .21. and it isn't just about economy, its a huge weight savings. That means superior cornering and acceleration. Wait till you see one in action, they rip in an 8 scale.

plus one to Furadi, the .18 tz that ran today driven by Dillon Rodriguez (kyosho buggy) was very fast, and had plenty of power, but the fuel mileage attained is not much better than a .21 due to the throttle necessary to get the same power.

They were using a custom motor mount, possibly home made (though well built) which with the motor being lighter lowered the center of gravity and overall made the buggy handle much smoother through the rough track.

I did notice that since the buggy required more throttle to get the same effect, the power was a bit less consistent and a bit peaky overall. This could be compensated for in clutch setting and throttle training for the most part in my opinion. In short, more wheel spin and less traction directly, though it was a first time out with the motor, and the usual gearing adjustments had not yet been made.

Overall today Dillon (running an OS TZ .18 in a Kyosho) took second to Steve Antill, who is running the standard Vspec .21 in a very well set up RC8.

i to race with dillion at the Silver State track, and the Sin City RC track. Dillion actually set the track record for fastest lap a few weeks ago. But Richard Saxton took it back.

Thank you for helping with info. This might be worth trying in the new XRAY 808 because it is light already.
