I've been taking a hard look at this sale here on rctech:

and wondered if 3 gallons was too much through a buggy to expect to get a lot of use out of it before I have to start replacing a ton of stuff (suspension, transmission, diffs, etc).

The car looks to be in really good shape in the photos. This will be my 1st 1/8 buggy, but I know XRAY has a great reputation and I want something that will be competitive - which this will. The only thing I am worried about is the wear on the parts. Any opinions, comments, suggestions? Thanks!

Three gallons isn't even broken in for an Xray. I would've described it as "near new". For that price you'd be crazy not to get it.

Figure it this way, break in on a highend engine, done correctly usually takes about a gallon of fuel. If the buggy was used for racing, (most likely), 3 gallons is nothing. thats about 2 months of racing with practice here and there. Buy it!!!

Thanks guys, with your input and some thinking I pulled the trigger and got it. Now I just need to figure out the engine to go with it, and I'll be in business.

I'm excited! Haven't done nitro since the original Traxxas Nitro Hawk (which I still have) and have always wanted to get into the 1/8 buggy world. Now if they would just finish the local track by my house, I'll be good to go!

Any recommendations on spare parts to have around when racing? Engine recommendations are good too.

Some good engines to get are the GO Tech 3 port and the Novarossi N21B.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Go-Tech engines. I'm also eyeing the Jammin .21 and the offerings from O.S.

I've got some time before this thing has to be up and running though, which will give me some breathing room to check the forums here for info and see if any other killer deals are to be had in the For Sale forum. In hindsight, this buggy was so well priced I don't know why I had second thoughts in the first place!

The only downside is that the local shops don't carry XRAY, so I will have to mail order from Amain or somewhere. But I'll just make sure I have a few spares to get me through a race weekend and I should be ok. The track won't be co-located with a hobby store anyways.

A-Main and Tiltedrc.com should have you covered for parts. If you're up for spending $200-$250 you will not find a better engine than the Jammin .21. From what I have seen, this engine will run with anything, at any price and will out last most too.

GO's are the most reasonably price race engines on the track. Don't let the price fool you though, there are every bit a racing mill. Those engines are screamers! I hear the 3 and 5 ports are phenomenal too.

I know that the 3-port is marketed as a "sport" while the 5-port is the "race" version. For club racing, is it safe to assume that the 3-port (which is a steal even brand-new) is sufficient?

It would be awesome to get an engine around $120 instead of over $200, at least for the first one. Once I've gotten some gallons under my belt and raced a while, I would feel justified in trying out a higher-end mill.

It looks like I will be putting a Go-Tech 3 port in, at least to start. If I end up racing a lot and putting a lot of time into the engine, I will probably upgrade to a Jammin .21, but for my first one I can't go wrong for $115. It sounds like their customer support is excellent as well.

That means that other than servos, I'll have almost everything I need to run this car for under $300, which is incredible. I love this website. I really can't wait to start racing!
