The RTR is a very good machine to start racing with the way it is.
Upgrades to get are 8ight pro shock towers, aluminum shock caps (top & bottom), rear aluminum bearing inserts, centre aluminum bearing adaptor.
Those parts will make it more durable for racing.
Front and rear chassis braces are an option but not necessary just yet.
The RTR comes with grease in the diffs instead of oil, so changing to the diffs to the PRO spec to start with is a very good idea.
Replacing the hinge pins with the PRO Ti-Ni ones are also a good option but not necessary.
The rest of the buggy is the pretty much the same as the PRO, aside from the chassis and a couple of things but you will soon learn what is what.
A metal gear high torque servo for throttle is a must, as the stock one will not last very long. The steering servo will be fine for now.
As for parts your LHS is always a good option, or online hobby stores like A-Main carry all the 8ight parts at really good prices.

If you want to use a starter box you need the PRO engine mounts.
They come with plastic chassis braces. Aluminum are options.
