Default Head shims to run 30% in a RB S5 motor.

Hey guys,

I just recevied a perfect condtion RB S5 motor from one of our members.

I am going to be running 30% O'donnells in the motor. How many and what size head shims do I need to run?

Also will 30% put more wear and tear on a motor. I know that have read that it will run cooler due to the extra nitro content. But if I'm only practicing is it worht the extra wear and tear?

Would it be better to run 20% through the motor.

I will be running a JP-2 pipe on the motor.

Thank again for the help..

For my RB's running 30%, I run two shims. .20mm silver ones. My total shim height is .98.

Thank you for your reply.

Does that mean I need to run 2 .20 shims for a total of .40? Or a total of .20?

How did you caculate the total chim height? Did put some solder in the plug hole and rotate it 360 deg?

Thank you

The motor come with 2 shims. One is 0.2mm (RB P/N 01100-2) and the other is 0.1mm (RB P/N 01100-1), for a total of 0.3mm. You can add one more 0.1mm shim for a total of 0.4mm for use with 30% nitro. Or you can remove the 0.1mm & add a 0.2mm. Either way works fine.

Over the years I've run 20% & 30% and do not see much difference in engine wear. I settled on running 25% now and the stock shimming.

When I was running 30% for racing, I installed two .20 shims to the stack on the button. You can get away with running one .20 shim for 30%.

Like RBMike, I stopped running 30% for most of my fleet. I run 25% Tornado with the stock shims. No problems!

I guess I'm lazy... I've always run 30% in every motor I've had... and I've always ran just the stock shims. No problems...

(Sidewinder 30% Worlds)

The only RB motor I've had is a C3 however. I currently have a Werks B7 Pro, starting my 4th gallon now, and it is really starting to come alive. I'm getting close to 10 minute tanks now, since the motor is breaking in really good and I can start leaning it a bit more.

No that means his motor came with 2 shims, a 0.1 & a 0.2. Then he added (per the manual) 1 more 0.1 so he could run 30%. His motor should have a total of 0.4 in it now.

That's what my thinking was when I switched to 25%. Also all the european designed motors were designed for 25% anyway.

the RB and novarossi 21 motors are set from the factory to run up to 25% nitro without adding shim. Add .1mm shim for every 5% increase in nitro. (I emailed RB and that was what they told me).

I shim all my motors, 21 and 12 to run 30%, that way all I need to get is 30%.

25% is kind of hard to get. 20% is good for offroad but I can't use it for on road. One time I grabbed the wrong %, the other time my 20% sat for one year and I had to dump it.

Mpowerz, I've been running Byrons 25% race formula for a couple of years now. I like it because the motor run well on it & the inside of my motors are clean when I take them apart.
