The TeamVTX VTX-B1 (www.teamvtx.com) is a pretty good buggy for under $300 ($260 at RC Nation (http://www.rc-nation.com/display_part/855.php)). You can make upgrades down the road to make it race ready, but you can at least start practicing with the buggy as soon as you get it. The car handles the different tracks pretty decent right out of the box. The radio equipment is not the greatest and I would recommend putting that on your list as your first upgrade.

I would not suggest no getting an 800 dollar buggy because the first thing you are going to do is crash and crash allot if you are just starting out. And crashing an 800 dollar buggy sucks. I would suggest getting a nice used buggy. The Cen buggy is good and cheep if it is anything like the tuggy it is pretty solid. The Hyper 7 is also seems really nice. If you go ebay you can maybe get everything you need to start up for around 300 to 400.

Hyper 8. Or save a little bit extra and get the Jammin X1CR RTR.

RC8 Race Spec @ Tower Hobbies for $539.99. Great parts support and fully upgradable to the Factory Team version.

You can find Mugen MBX5 Prospecs for around $200 used, and that is a GREAT beginner car. You still need a radio, servos, engine, pipe, etc.... There is no such thing as a decent car for $300 ready to run.
