OFNA makes several RTR buggies and truggies in the $300 - $400 range.

Don't know much about them, though...

Like most things in life, you generally get what you pay for. Yes, the Losi vehicles cost a bit more, but they come with such upgrades as Spektrum radios, etc. that you don't realize that you should buy. The cheapo radios that come with other RTRs don't compare at all to the Spektrums.

Default which car to get

The Jammin Xr 1 or Cr 1 what ever it is. Its a decent car. my son bought one, didn't race it for six months, got ti out went to Barnstormers RC in CHester NY, one the B main go tbumped up to the A main finished 6 out of 9.

So it drives easy, he's had to adjust it by reading the manual, and he was able to do that, which is a miracle cause he's fairly lazy, wants to wait for me to fix it. Not any More.

Good Luck.

Personally, it is my humble opinion that if you are going to Race it you should build it, otherwise you just dont understand when the car is out of shape or not handling right, what is actually wrong.
Anybody can replace abroken part, its easy to find, but tuning the car goes hand in hand with builidng the car.
