Default Cheap Temp Guns

Hello All,

What do you guys think about cheap temp guns? Is it necessary to go for those high price temp guns? Also, if cheap temp guns are ok, which brand/model do you guys suggest?

Thanks in advance!!!

I use the $39 Odonnell temp/stopwatch. It's always been accurate to within 1 degree of the $300 Exergen and I've tested it many many times.

Yes, I was looking at that one. I just didn't know how reliable they are.

I've been using mine nearly every weekend for about 9 months with no problems. That's more than good enough for my $40.

That's funny because I checked my odonnell agianst 3 different Exergens both the flat DX series and the new DX501 and it was 20 to 30 degrees off.

You get what you pay for. I will say I very rarely use a temp gun anyway other than to check final temp after a qualifier or main. Tune to power and smoke. Guys that are scared becaue there motor runs over 240 aren't taking advantage of fuel mileage and power. My v-specs normally come off the track 260-280.

i use the duratrax temp gauge. small blue one. works great and can be adjusted to read the different metals. an anodized head will give a different reading than a non anod head will. thus you can change how the meter is "weighted" to get the proper readings. im sure the Odonnal also can me adjusted accordingly, which may explain the 20* difference seen by rdeppen

I use a cheapy, can't remember exactly what it is. However here's the point: Temp guns aren't used for tuning to temperature. You find a good tune, then temp it. That is about were your engine will normally run well. If you happen to temp it and it has jumped 50* then there is a problem and you need to start checking for air leaks in the exhaust, fuel lines, tank, etc. So the precision is not important, it is simply a tool to check for problems.
