IMO that's a seriously bad idea unless you are talking about 4200 mah packs. And even those are far inferior to a much cheaper 7000 mah sealed lead acid cell or, preferably, a 13,000 mah HT Batteries Li-po pack. Li-po is light and strong.

Yep, that's it. If you have a Power Panel on your box you can also use your starter box to power your RX charger. I did this at my last race. It worked great and I didn't need to bring a long AC extention cord. Of course I was pitted right next to the drivers stand...

So do I need to make a battery hold down to use in the chrome top? Or will it work with the items that come with the box? What are the dimensions of this bad boy? I can't really tell from the pics.
Oh, and does the instructions let you know what the C rating is? I need to find out if my charger can handle it.

Are you sure it's rated that high? The reason I ask is because of the charge amp ratings on the HT multi charger. It would take 13 amps to charge a 13,000 mah pack at 1C and the HT charger can only push 2 (or maybe it's 2.5) amps, which at 1C is only going to fast charge up to around 2,000 mah unless you have a couple of days to kill while your battery charges.
I seem to recall from a converstaion with an HTBatteries rep last year that the starter pack is only rated at 1800 mah, and the charge times I've seen on a couple of HT rigs are about right for a full fast charge at 1C. That would mean the pack would have to be real close to the max amperage output of the charger.

bah thats rubbish.
i run 2 3300 stick packs in ofna chrome top. i can easily get two days of racing without a charge. they will work perfect and make your box A LOT lighter. you need to wire up your battery to where the gel cell used to plug into to. you run the negative wire to one of the stick packs. then run the positive wire to the + on the other stick pack. (thats one wire per stick pack.) then run another wire from the open - and open + on each pack and connect them together. that will run 14.4 volts.
your box will have a ton more starting power. plenty to turn over any engine on the market.
and i secured my two stick packs with double sided tape in the rear of my box.

All right that's cool. I just thought there was something a little more than that. That is the way most boxes are wired up for the two stick packs isn't it? But sounds like you can use all the types of power for this box. And that is good to know. I guess if one way doesn't work I will try the next. So I thank you guys for all the info.

I use a gel cell in one box and either 2 x 3s1p Li-ion packs or 2 x 3800 nimh packs. The li-ion packs are light and at 19.8v have plenty of juice for tight engines.

As for stick packs, I've run an old duratrx box with a single 12V motor just like the ofna chrome top and it did fine with 2 1800 nicd sticks. It would make a day or two of racing just fine. Back then it was somewhat of a pita as I didn't have a charger which would charge them without having to unplug and do them individually. Before the stick packs I carried a 30A rivergate ps and used it to run 2 8th buggy bump boxes, 3 chargers, and several glo stick quick chargers.
