Default New steering servo

Hey guys, been bashing on my Rival for a while now and would like to upgrade the steering servo. I have been trying to read on here and looked at a few different models but really don't understand all of the specifics. Anyone have any suggestions they'd like to share?

Brent

If you have plans on using a bec in the future a HV servo may be a choise.
Since I got back into rc I only had hitec + savöx. Both brands hs been good.

First, figure out your budget. Second start looking at the specs of servos in that budget. There's torque, usually specified in oz and you want at least 250oz. The more the better here as it's what actually turns your wheels. Then there's speed expressed in time for a number of degrees of rotation. I forget how many degrees of rotation but it's standard and the time will be expressed as something like .18sec. The lower the number the faster the servo is. For a MT speed isn't as important but something less than .18 would be good but closer to .15 would be better.

Well your stock servo is 138oz and for your budget there isn't much out there with more torque. There is the Savox SC-1232SG with 250oz of torque and its $73 on Amain right now. Persoanlly I'd wait until you can afford around $100 as you'll have more choices and can get something with alot more performance.

Hitec HS-7954SH 333oz @6.0 volts 403oz @ 7.4 volts $99
Tower Hobbies TS-170 333oz @ 6.0 volts $89 Actually a clone of the Hitec above but not rated for 7.4v use
Savox SA-1283SG 416oz @ 6.0 volts $103
Savox SV-1270TG 361oz @ 6.0 volts 487oz @ 7.4 volts $99

Just a few examples. And you need an external bec to power the servos at 7.4volts. The internal bec of your esc is 5-6 volts, which will go down under load. Whether 6volts or 7.4 volts, an external bec is the only way to get maximum power out your servo. Hope I've helped you out, happy hunting.

If you go bec/7.4V make sure your receiver can handle it.

Get a Solar d772. Its a monster and very cheap and reliable. On 7.4v it puts out over 400in-lbs and a speed of .17 which is fine for a mt. I run 2 of them in my mgt 4.6 and they have outlasted my expectations by far. I seen a few videos where they really put down about 350in-lb. For $17.50 you can not beat them. I have ran mine in my mgt for over 20hours. http://www.hobbypartz.com/33p-solarservo-d772.html

I also run one in my e-truggy and there faster D771 in most of my other 10th scales. Never have had one fail. I thought i had one go bad in my slash 4x4 while i was out bashing it. Took me about 2 min to get to it and had a rock jammed in the steering rack. It was to hot to touch but once it cooled off it was fine and still running fine today. This was in early 2012.

I can vouch for the Tower TS-170 as a good investment. I've had it in an E-Maxx, Savage, RC8BE, and now my Losi 8ight-TE over the course of 8-9 years and its still going strong.

Well, went to my local hobby store today and picked up the Hitec HS-7955TG. I am really pleased with how snappy the steering is now!
Probably won't be till after the first of the year, but I think the next mod will be an ESC/motor combo. I guess I'd better get to reading and researching. Feel free to chime in if you have an opinion. Definitely want to move up to a 150a combo and stay with 4s.
