Default Tacon motor overheating, why? gears, timing?

I just converted a my 2nd t maxx to a bl e maxx. I installed a 80amp xerun esc with a tacon 2200kv 540L 11t 2 pole motor. It runs great for about 10 minutes then the temp starts to rise. up to 140 to 150 deg. Of course then I stop using it. I'm running 72t spur and 24t pinion. Should I add a fan to the motor? and should the air be pushed into or pulled away from the motor? I've heard about timing but know nothing. What should I do? Thanks...

140-150 is nothing to be worried about, esp after 10min of running. I wouldn't get to worried until its up around 170-180. How many cells are you running? If 4s your gearing sounds a little tall if you are using an emaxx trans.

I agree 140-150 isnt too bad, but it seems like your motor is a bit small for your application. For a maxx sized truck a 3674 xl motor or preferably a 4074 sized motor would have been a better choice.

Rule of thumb for gearing:
Hot motor + cool esc = under geared.
Cool motor + hot esc = over geared.

Gearing is too tall. Hell, I run a 4074 2-Pole (2000kv) on 19/65, 5S LiPo, and that comes off ~170f at the extreme end of a hard run.
