Questions?? savage 3.5 engine upgrade

Hi.
Im a newb so I apologize for my ignorance in advance.

So I just bought my first nitro truck. Savage 3.5. In good condition. 3 speed. Want to know if I can put a 4.6 or a 5.9 on it. I would appreciate any legit serious info.

Yes you can put either but I would go for a better aftermarket motor.

Get yourself a Dynamite Big Red .28..

Affordable, direct drop-in, big power for a Savage, easy break-in and tune. OS A5 or Odonnell purple plugs.

get a picco p3, lrp .28, sh .28, lrp z30 etc... Just do some research & figure out what is best for what you want to do. I personally run an ERCM modded SH P8 .28 in my XL & I'm loving it. More power than I really need & almost uncontrollable in dirt & gravel, but you can never have too much power. But what it all boils down to is what you can afford.

I'd stick with a pull start. They are much easier on the one way bearings in the motor which can get expensive to replace.

GEt the LRP .28 its i direct bolt in, extremly easy to tune and it takes 4-5 tanks to break in. when i gear it 18/47 and it still pulls wheelies. the 4.6 and the 5.9 are good motors but for the same price the lrp kicks their rear ends! bte get the hpi bulletproof hardened diff gear sets for the front and rear. with a 5.9 or a lrp 28 the diff is gears are not strong enough. ive gone through many gears in the diff

and i say get a rotostart, those pullstarts a pain in the @$$ they pull out alot and if your engine is not perfect tuned its a pain to start. The lrp comes with an internal one way bearing end it has never failed on me.

You will need to buy the backplate adaptor for the rotostart which i cant find on towerhobbies

I'm running a sh28 in one of my savages and really like it. Trying a different Carb on it now because if it gets too hot it pushes the fuel back into the tank.

I would try a different tuned pipe if you are having heat issues or richer your needles.

Well I finally got the basics to run it. My neighbor has a 25 with a 5.9. We caught a little getting them to run right but I found the perfect tuning link for my 3.5 and in 5 mins it was scream like a banshee. No need to upgrade that one lol. But he got pissed and is buying a whole new truck. So I bought his. Can anyone help me with a detailed tune for hpi 5.9 stock. He messed with the screws so much im not sure where to start.

Go to the HPI website for break in specs and start from there.

Finally ran my savage with the sh28 med plug 20% od fuel and a hpi composite carb . Runs great and it doesnt push fuel back into the carb after it gets warm anymore and doesnt spew extra fuel out the pipe from running so rich trying to keep it from boiling the fuel.
