Default Need some help with my Stampede

Here's the story. I have an old Stampede that had a XL-1 speed controller with a 20 turn motor. The speed controller went bad so I bought an XL-5 and a new 15 turn motor. The truck works really well and is quite fast, but the motor gets smokin hot. Do I need to change the gearing to accomodate the new motor? If so how do i figure out what gears to use?

Thanks

for sure you need to put a smaller pinion gear on the motor or a bigger spur gear on the tranny

the difference is the motor being 5 turns difference, try at least five teeth count to start and check temps ... if you have 20 pinion try 15.

a one tooth change on the big gear is worth 2 to 3 of the small gear
...so if you had an 88 you could try 90

a good starting point would be to use the stock gearing of the new xl-5 pede. i think its 18tooth pinion and 86 tooth (not 100% sure but you can check on traxxas' website). Also make sure nothing is binding.

It's the opposite. 3 on the spur = 1 on the pinion.

Actually, if the gearing is really 18/86 then it's closer to 5 spur teeth to 1 pinion.
