Keep in mind, in addition to the truck you buy, you will need two good batteries and a good battery charger - If your going to stay monster truck and 4 wheel drive.
In addition to that, you will at some point want to upgrade to brushless and lipo batteries because the e-maxx is really slow stock. And not to mention you need two lipos, a duel charger, and a high price brushless system. Get a stampede or highroller, they are much cheaper to run, maintain, and upgrade.

Sounds like I have to go E-Maxx. I have picked up that there are at least a couple different versions out there. Is it worth it to get a new one or would a used one be just about as good?

All of the versions are good, it just depends on the condition of the truck that you buy.
Personally I would buy new - as a majority of the time, going new, in my experiance, cost less. This has been my experinace.
Most monster trucks are owned by bashers, though racers have them as well. They are bashed and parts wear out, same with racers though racers at times can be harsher on a truck, they are usually not in sand, mud, the occasional puddle ect, and are usually maintained on a more regular schedule.
If you buy a $400 truck for $200 it sounds like a great deal, until you have to replace a less than desireable body $30 and a new set of tires and rims $70, and that is if nothing else is worn out.
So your $200 used truck just became a $300 used trucks and you havent even gotten into the mechanical or electrical parts. ect.... you can take it from there but I hope you understand my point of view, even if you may not agree with it.

I ve been there myself and searched both Traxxas and Savage way.
Not starting a flame here since it seems that many people consider it being a Savage "Against" Traxxas.
I tried both and they both are good trucks imo.
Now i think it s a fact that out of the box the Savage and HPI plastics are more solid than Traxxas.
I saw so many friends snapping their A arms on traxxas so many times, if you look at the second hand market, you d find that way more Traxxas are upgraded with RPM or other suspension arms than Savages. Most racers/ bashers use stock plastics on the Savage. Using alu is another story it s more of a look and personal taste.
The revo is a more complicated approach and I would personally never get one to bash around.
I would go for a Savage as 1st choice, Losi LST ( but you want electri so ...) T maxx and skip the Revo.
Another advantage of the Flux is that it s so popular that you d find so many parts, bodies, ressources and forum to make it unique.
Well i have had an e-maxx lots of fixxing broken parts good thing lots of parts are avalible at most local HS.
I also had an E-Savage AKA E-Zilla. I thought that one was the better buy it came with a good charger and batteries. Not a lot of broken parts much or durable. down side= local HS don't carry lots of parts.
for the money i would go with the E-savage / E-Zilla
not to dis on the Clod but i had one of those too. it's just not good for hardcore bashing.
i know it may seem a little expensive but why dont you try the traxxas summit
fully waterproofed lights for nite runs and it can climb pretty much anything add to that remote locking diffs its an all round winner all year round running if i didnt love my savage so much id have one myself

i dont like summits very much, there too complicated, too many servos, that means more things can break.
im not sure but i think the e savage is the only rtr that comes with a charger and two very good batteries. i did have one until i got into nitro and sold it to a friend of mine. you will definitely want a couple more batteries though. a fan on the esc and motors for more powerfull batteries and you will have a great basher.
