Default Broken Front Diff

Hello, I am new here. I posted on RCUniverse a bit, but they don't like to answer questions with substance, only best of the best or worst of the worst, etc type threads.

Anyways...

I have a Duratrax Thunderquake. It is a bit old, but its fun to mess around with. The front differential stopped working my last time out. Someone suggested looking at the diff cup set screw, it may be loose. I haven't been able to do this yet, but it will be the first thing I look at.

Is there anything else that is a common failure on these diffs?

Also, has anyone used a car gear oil, such as 75w140? The 75w140 is quite abit thinner at about 120cSt vs the 1000+cSt grease normally used in the diffs.

SET SCREW ON DRIVE CUP ON THE DIFF IS THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM ON ALL CARS AND TRUCKS. I HAVE BLOWN OUT A HUB BEFORE AND IT ACTED LIKE A DIFF CAME APART (SPUN AND MELTED THE RIM). OTHER THEN THAT I PACK MY FRONT DIFF WITH A THICK OIL LIKE 100000 ALL THE WAY TO 500000 DEPENDING ON IF I AM BASHING...LIGHTER OILS FOR RACING

Thanks for the response. I guess I should pick up some loctite. I can't remember what color I need, purple?

So with such a light oil in my diff the thing wouldn't be losing much power spinning the diff. Hmmm, so this thing might haul around the backyard. I'll give it a shot and report back.

BLUE LOCTITE IS WHAT YOU NEED, AND TRY A THICKER DIFF FLUID FOR JUST BASHING, IT WILL PULL YOU THROUGH THE GRASS UNLIKE A LIGHTER FLUID WHICH CAN UNLOAD WHEN YOU SPIN A WHEEL

Ok, that makes sense. I will only be bashing. The truck is too outdated for anykind of racing. I'm sure any current monster truck would blow a Thunderquake away.

I'll pick up some new thick diff grease.

Is there anything that could be welded together or installed that could make the diffs have something like a spool or limited slip?

YOU CAN BASICALLY "LOCK" YOUR FRONT DIFF WITH LIKE A 500000 DIFF GREASE, KYOSHO MAKES THAT. IT IS A PASTE. THE THICKER THE FLUID THE LESS SLIP YOU WILL HAVE.

Just to make sure, by lock you mean to make it so that the differential would be similar to a spool or limited slip type differential and not actually lock up the differential and keep it from moving.

Thanks for you help.

Thanks for your help. I think I'm gonna give some thicker fluid a try in the front first to see what happens.

So to update an old thread...

I finally figured out what was wrong with my truck. I managed to lose a dogbone. Looks like the CV joint failed and it just flew off. I ordered new parts that should be here next week. In the mean time I'm going to clean up the truck, flipping the exhaust to the other side of the engine created a bit of a mess from the oil. I figure I'll make a set of stacks out of rubber hose after its all clean. I also picked up some 20wt shock oil and really thick diff fluid. I think I'm going to wait on the diff fluid for now.
