Default 4.6 Savage slipper/spur gear

What is the deal with these things. It is adjusted by the book. It has already eaten three. Does anyone run a Robinson steel spur gear on these trucks? Any suggestions from you savage owners would be great. Thanks

if this happens after a period of time its because u are running the stock clutch setup with tends to overheat , i had the same problem aswell but since i vented my clutchbell (cut holes in the front and fluted them) i havnt had the problem since and check ur gear mesh aswell

but i recommend u get the hpi racing clutch bell i think the part number is 86168 or its for the wheelie bar i aint sure but its 1 of the 2 lol

buy a decent clutch or vented clutch bell and ur problem will be solved ! dont go with alloy spur gear ull brake other stuff and they cost more money like tranny internals etc...

Try this it worked wonders for me. Get a piece of printing paper cut a piece off and fold it in half. Loosen your engine mount and roll the folded piece of paper between the clutch and spur gear. Next push the gears together really firm and why doing this do up the engine mounts bolts. Now roll the paper out of the gears. Your mesh is now perfectly set.... Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hey guys, thanks alot for the help so far, but I might have misled you on the question. It is not eating the teeth. It is eating the slipper clutch pad and the back of the spur gear. I have been tightning it up all the way and backing it off 1/2 turn like the manual says. It will loosen over time and I will tighen it back up and then it will last about 2 or 3 more laps and then it is smoked. It will smell like burnt rubber. ( that is my slipper burning ) I'm sorry I did not include this on my first post. It would have saved alot of confusion. Again, thanks for the help.

tighten all the way and loosen 1/8 turn. by the end of this month the savage x will be out and you may be able to pick up hpi's new dual sliiper clutch set-up. that may help. also tr getting a better clutch that wont create as much heat.

I would have to suggest looking into the drivetrain. Here is why I say this.

I had LOTS of problems with my SS right out of the box. While breaking in the motor I melted the teeth off of three spurs. The stock clutch shoes were slipping and heating up. I bought some Nova Racing aluminum clutch shoes and a vented hardened clutch bell. No more slipping.

Now I would literally melt the center right out of the spur. The slipper clutch was slipping. I bought a Golden Horizon two piece aluminum/steel spur. No more melting.

Then my two speed tranny committed suicide. Blew up! I had it apart several times and all looked like it should. It came pre-assembled so I didn't do anything wrong. I called HPI and they replaced it, but my kids pitched in and bought me the three speed for Fathers day. This was all in the first six tanks.

I finally did get the motor broken in, but the GH spur gear broke. I have been using a plastic spur gear since. The same one since early summer. Mine is adjusted just as you and the manual describe. If everything is working properly it shouldn't be doing this. Check your CVDs/dogbones, diffs. and tranny. There is a problem somewhere.

Don't give up. I didn't. I wanted to throw mine off a cliff. Everyone was bragging about theirs and I couldn't run mine for more than a 1/2 a tank without melting something. I have about a gallon through mine now, and have beaten the snot out of it. I have yet to replace anything since this issue.

damn youve had some bad luck, i dont think ive ever heard of a 2-speed blowing in a savage before. spur gears are common but the 2-speed is usually the strongpoint of the drivetrain. ive blown diffs (till i upgraded to the 4-spider gear) and i snapped a driveshaft. but yea like rowdyray said, dont give up. it will reward you greatly once you work around any problems you have.
