Default traction compound

UPS seems to be having trouble getting the SXT here so everyone bring a backup compound in case it doesn't get here tomorrow. No smell if possible.

Having a heck of a time with the Judge. I bought 8 different speedometer combo's. 3-4 cheapo's and 4 spendy brand name ones. the cheapo ones develop to much "wander" for what we are trying to achieve. At least to me they do.

The better ones are calibrating better. I have a favorite of the 8, and we'll use that one.

And 20mph just sounds weak... I don't care who you explain that to. I've calibrated the judge to show about 4 times actual speed. This does several things. Firstly it's a funner number to explain. 80mph is more fun than 20mph (it's still a "relative" number). The other thing it does is make the sampling data 4 times more accurate 20.1mph could have been anywhere from 80.4 to 80.8 based on the float of the missing decimal. at 80mph, it's simply 80mph. Much more accurate.

And I've added a small amount of load to it, so we are not free-revving things.

I should have it wrapped up in about 5-6 more hours.

Thumbs up

Well. another great wild about wheels race put on by northern mini racers. There was close racing all weekend on the road course and the oval. I think the bombers class was a hit with everybody, drivers and spectators alike. Its nice to see the spectators enjoying the racing and everytime I looked over there it was a wall of people. It really sucks that we can't trust people to leave our very expensive racing equipment alone overnight I guess security companies get the gaurds that can't pass all the tests to be a real cop!!! I hope mark finds his caliper somewhere.

Se ya all after the nats

Thank you to all who helped out this weekend. Here are the mains results. I am going to try and get the bomber heats sorted out and get them up as well as the rest of the qualifiers so stay tuned later this week.

Thanks Northern Mini Racers, I think Wild about Wheels was a success. The racing was fun and challenging all weekend. Sorry Tyler, all that work you did on my car and I eat a wall on the first lap. Guess I couldn't handle the pressure of being in first. Still leaving myself room for improvement next year. Thanks again to everyone that put the show on, Keith.

Thanks everybody, we had a good time.

I think THIS version of spec racing worked out about as fair as I'd ever seen. It indirectly negates ANY advantage from a killer motor or high voltage, or the work arounds for roll out rules, and all the tech' that ensues.

Toss it on the machine, it passes or it does not. you do what you have to do, to make it pass. gave a person some options. And that added an element of fun as well.

What we learned. I think the motors, and we had a HUGE variance in old and new and abused and re-oiled old junk motors. I didn't see any car that I felt was out of the hunt. Depending on who carried speed out of the corner once up to speed, everybody looked VERY similar to me.

I saw nearly every car with identical fast laps when it was over.

There was some anomaly with older brushed speed controls and low dollar current brushed controllers. Not sure what it was. I had an original Duster that would go on the judge at 80.1 mph and came off at 81.8. The one practice run it creeped 3mph. NOTHING changed, still showing 83% on throttle, but found 3mph. I don't know if the tires got bigger from heat or sauce saturation, or if the fets in the older units heatsoak and change. because we're not allowing the speed control to hit full speed, just holding it at a percentage of full throttle.

Whatever that was, I think I talked to 5-6 people that had some. Stiffler had some voltage creep, I had some, Randon was fine with his FXR Tekin, but it died, and we pulled an old Novak Racer out of a junk car we brought along, and he found himself with some voltage creep. Mind you, the way we handled the mains worked that out too. I knew I had some creep and started the race at 76mph and it came off at 78.8 *WHEW*. I was a little worried, It was kind of a guess.

BUT, it all worked out and those that had some voltage creep figured it out by the mains, so that we ALL passed tech before and after the mains. So good job to all of us for making the effort to have some fair and fun racing.

Spec racing only works if you can trust the racers. We all know how to cheat at it. Having the cajones NOT to do it. That's what makes for great racers and a great race.

I was talking to somebody and I mentioned how hard it was, even though I fully understand what we're trying to do. You're out there, and you can turn up your car's speed at will by bumping up your high speed adjustment... Years and years of racing and looking for ANY possible way to get more speed, that's hard to overcome.

I know I wasn't even in the show until the last round, and I was the bubble man. To look down and see my speed control at 83%, and knowing all I had to do was turn it up and I'd have more ass-whip... I can see how cheating a slower spec class happens now. I completely get it. IT'S JUST RIGHT THERE...simple change and BAMMO, more power... But you have to resist, have some integrity and do what's right for the common good.

But that's where you have to rely on the people you race with to have the integrity not to do those kinds of things. I think we proved we are a trustworthy group.

I remember putting my car on the judge after the main... "please oh please oh please be under 80..." ...lol... There was that mystery in the air and we all had to make it work. And we all did. good job to all of us. And Randy Lynn for whooping all our butts.

I've got an idea to make a more commercial version of the judge. I think the idea is sound. It's not for everybody, but the idea seemed to have some merit. and it was a lot of fun.

Final numbers on the judge, mileage 118 miles on the odometer. albeit not accurate, but still a fun number. I think the "relative" 80mph number thing was a LOT more fun than say, 22mph. or whatever we were actually geared for. And it made no difference what the final number was, as we were all the same.

We could have "MAYBE" dropped it to 75mph from 80 and it would have cleaned up some of the racing. "MAYBE".

Also, next year, nothing wider than say 200mm (or some random number we'll figure out).
The 235mm wide cars made for a lot of passing issues and created a few more "incidents" because of the open wheel effect. That's a "live and learn" thing. And a better handling car requires more power, and we don't want that.

I felt it was just fast enough that we had to "work". There were no gimmies.

Good job to all.

Mains, fastest lap is in bold, qualifying position is in red.

I'm of the opinion, I've never seen closer racing. This isn't just the top few drivers, this is EVERYBODY. Really, I'd say it came down to traffic. and the mains are NEVER the place to look for consistency, but we sure had some! Nice work everybody.
