Default Parking lot races

I Have a concrete slab in front of my garage,I blew it of with my leaf blower
to remove all the debris.Wanted to make a few laps with my TC5 but didn't
make 10 feet when I hear a awful noise.A grain of sand found its way into
the pinion gear and put a nice grove in the spur gear.Is this common when
you guys run parking lot races? How do you keep any small particles from
entering exposed gears?Maybe just bad luck on my part.
