Default 7800KV in an RC18T... good/not good

Its too late anyway... I just bought it. But im just wanting to make sure a 7800kv motor will be a good fit for an RC18T. The setup I bought was an EZrun 25amp ESC (with the blue heatsink) and a Tacon 2030 7800kv motor.

I have this brand new RC18T Factor Team roller that I built up with all trick parts and after I got it all done I lost interest in it so I tried to sell it... with absolutely NO luck at all... so unless I want to literally GIVE it away... Im just going to keep it. But, I dont want to put any more money into than I absolutely have to so I got the cheapest brushless system could find... I did get the program card also... all for $38... $48 shipped to me in canada.

Anyway, just wondering if this KV motor was the right choice. The last time I had this truck running I had a 5400kv motor in it and it seemed a bit slow. Hopefully the higher KV motor wont get too hot.

It will be very fast, but if you gear it moderately it should not run too hot and it should be controllable. Try running punch control on 1 or 2 and the timing very low, setting 1 or 2. This will really tone the craziness down a bit. Low punch control and very high timing can soften the curve even more, but the 7800Kv will probably run hot with too much timing. Keep the temps under about 175* or so and you can set it up however you like.

Thanks again

I have the same exact set up...The car will be faster than anything you have ever owned but the battery will drain super fast..I am looking to buy the 5200kv but it seems its sold out...

The motor you are getting is great for show off speed runs.

I've had a 6800kv and now an 8000kv in my 18T. I really like it and have no issues with that high of a kv rating. (On 2s Lipo)

The 6800kv was smoother, more controllable, and had rediculous runtimes. (35-45 min.) My 8000kv is much more violent on the take off. I had to purchase the MIP steel rear diff after I toasted 3 of the stock ones. I run the diff a little loose to act as a slipper. Otherwise it just flips over backwards on take off.

As far as heat, run time, and power... Go for it. Nothing to be worried about as long as you don't go crazy with gearing. I highly recommend the Duratrax hard case 30c LiPo. Well worth the $30.00 when you have some extra $$.

I have a selection of Duratrax 2S and SPC 2S lipos to run in it... I have a 3S but I doubt ill run that with a KV that high.

Great to know this setup will work for me. I forsee this truck only being run on pavement... so hopefully it will all be o.k. Im going to put a "the toyz" heat sink and fan on it as well.

The truck has "the toyz" steel input and ring gears as well as CVD's and ball bearings all round. It also has a Slipper installed. So hopefully it will all come together as a truck worth running... or worth selling. Im going to put it up for $200 when I get it all together. Who knows. Maybe having it ARTR in need of only a radio will make it worth more. Not likely though now that Associated released the T2 and B2 with brushless installed and 2.4 radios for just over $200... Oh well.

Thanks for the confirmation guys. Much appreciated. If I dont like this motor or if it get too hot ill keep my eyes peeled for a 5400kv motor to replace it with.

You can't beat ezrun for the money. I got my son the 5200 kv combo for $38 shipped to go in his Megatech truck. I too saw those 18T BL combos for $200. I wish Duratrax would do something comparable, but then it is very easy and cheap to do yourself.

Just wanted to update quickly. I finally got this truck all together and got to run it inside a hotel ballroom on a makeshift road course we setup with some paper cups. Man, its amazing. Very fast but the motor stays very very cool on 2S. Its geared 14/57 with the slipper set a bit looser than i would like but it really rips and even indoors with lots of starting and stopping it stayed very cool for a full 2S 1800mah pack. Im very impressed with this EZrun/Tacon combo. With the original Tekin 5400KV combo I had in this truck It was kindof boring... not fast enough even geared 16/57. Now though, it really rips. Everything fits perfectly also... motor bolts into the factory team mount no problem, ESC mounts on the driveshaft cover. It all looks very factory. For $40 for the whole system... how could I complain.

Just thought someone might benefit from this info.

Thanks for the update, I just bought that same combo except with the Tacon 5200kv motor for my SC18. Just got it in the mail today so I'll see how it runs very soon.

Heres some pics of the truck... just painted up a new Jconcepts lid for it. Its so hard to paint these small bodies well... I can do a great job on the bigger stuff but Im really terrible when it comes to the 1/18 vehicles.

I posted a different question about this same combo in the SC18 thread. So another question...what is an ideal pinion/spur gear combination to use for hard surface/street driving? I am currently running the stock Reedy 5000kv with the stock 14t pinion and 60t spur. I do have a set of alloy spurs that range from 11t to 14t. I want to make sure I don't overheat the motor to maximize the life of the combo, yet I also like to go fast...LOL! Would a 13/58 combo be ideal? Thoughts? Thanks!

In this truck im running a 14/57 combo and ran it indoors on carpet on 2S lipo and it stayed very cool. I was impressed. I cant comment on the gearing in a belt drive truck with smaller tires on pavement. But id start with something close to what I started with and keep an eye on temps.

Yeah, need to get myself and IR heat gun. Probably pick one up next payday. Cool, I'll pick up a couple different sized spur gears and start out with using what you suggest. Thanks for the reply, pavmentsurfer.
