Traxxas 2.4ghz radio in a Team Associated RC18R - anyone done it?
I have access to a used Team Associated RC18R and want to upgrade it to a 2.4ghz setup. I'm considering the Traxxas 2.4ghz Transmitter & Receiver setup since it seems available complete for a reasonable price.
Has anyone upgraded the stock AM radio in their RC18R with this particular radio?
If so, how hard was the job to do? Any issues to be aware of?
Cheers,
MarkT

Are you sure you like the design of the Traxxas transmitter? To me and a several people I know they feel a little toyish..
But YOU need to comfortable with it......
I run the Associated XP-3SS RTR Radio and can only say good things about it:
*Small receiver (fits good on the top deck)
*long battery life
*charging jack (does the Traxxas have one)
*Dual rate for steering, Throttle ATV
*never had a glitch. even without the antenna on the receiver
I don not work for AE, but if you can get it cheap it will work fine.

It would not be hard at all. Just have to swap out the rx's and bind the radio and your done.
BUT
I would reconsider your radio pick.
The traxxas radio you are talking about go for 99.99$
http://www.hobbypeople.net/index.php...xxas-link.html
or you can get a Airtronics MX-Sport for 99.99$
http://www.hobbypeople.net/index.php...io-tx-rx.html/
and its a much better radio. It has a nice digital display that makes tuning your car much easier. also the rx's are much smaller and they can fit perfectly in a 18r.

Stock ESC Compatibility Issues...
Regarding the Spektrum, I heard that it's not compatible with the stock RC18R ESC. I don't know about the compatibility with the Traxxas or Airtronics...

The Associated one looks just like their AM radio. I like the feel of that one so it should feel fine too.

I have a Spektrum DX3.0 and it has 4 model memory. I have it hooked up to 3 rigs right now. It is great for bashing. I also have a HobbyKing cheapo 2.4 that seems to be just as good as the Spek for bashing. Also the RX is tiny and it can fit into a Micro SCT with no prob. I got it on HK for 22 bucks plus 6 bucks for an extra RX. The same radio can be had at HobbyPartz.com and they offer free shipping.

Thanks. Is it safe to assume that the Associated 2.4ghz system will work with the stock ESC? What about the Traxxas system? Anyone tried that one?

I don't have an RC18, but I do run the traxxa slink 2.4Ghz in a mini erevo that wa soriginally traxxas AM radio. I paid $46 for mine on eBay with a rcvr. I have bought 2 other rcvrs so far for $15-18.
Radio works fine, don't see any reason it wouldn't work the same for you.

Certainly the Associated would work, and I would not be worried about the Trxxas either. Incompatibility between radios and ESCs are not very common.
