I have an opportunity to trade for an RCXRAY by trading my 18R? IS it worth it the XRAY 1/18 scale looks like it is a better onroad car than the associated 18R....
Look, I see these debates over the M18 and the 18R all the time. What I can tell you, is that when properly setup, both cars run extremely well. The rest is up to personal preference. That being said, if you're talking about racing one of them, it really doesn't matter which car is better than the other if your local area doesn't have a decent turnout with one or the other. In that case, go with what car that can produce the best competition. If you're talking street bashing, than the 18R has better suited ground clearance for that.
As for myself, well I still go with the m18 for pure racing.

What is a RCXRAY? If you are referring to the XRAY M18 and you are going to be running it outside with us on asphalt, you probably won't like it.
I wouldn't trade my 18R for a M18 and I own both. Parts availability is greater for the 18R and parts prices for the 18R pale in comparison to those of the M18. The M18 is good on carpet and smooth indoor asphalt surfaces but lacks damping to absorb asphalt inconsistencies. The M18 is also pretty much limited to foams for grip.
You don't need to purchase the Exotek right away for the 18R, you can be fast without the Exotek though I believe that the Exotek conversion has greater potential to be faster but also makes the car more difficult to drive (In modified).
i agree with IIGQ4u the m18 is a smaller vehicle and is better suited t b raced on a smooth carpet or indoor track......im sure u r not going want to order every part that breaks on the m18 from ebay.....AE parts are basically stocked at every LHS in the states but do wat u want
I've seen your R and it is definitely a mile away from a store bought one, I know though you've said that you can be fast with a regular r too, but just talking about the vehicle apart from other things

I had my Exotek chassis before I owned my 18R so of course I was going to install it.
I know that the stock 18R can be made to run very fast but I would recommend a stock electronics overhaul at some point. There are some upgrades that I would consider recommended but they would based upon my own personal preference.
The M18 is a pure performance vehicle that excels indoors. An 18R cannot keep up (in this area). Anytime an 18R has raced with us locally, they usually end up disappearing after a few weeks. As it is, they are meant for different purposes. A rally car is meant to be all terrain, but in doing so, it looses some of its ability to become the best at anyone.
BTW: There is another advantage the M18 has on carpet. Price of foam tires... by far!
You wont be breaking parts on a m18 nearly as easy as the other vehicle listed to even worry about parts availability. Craftmanship and EU made, have their advantages in this area.
Barring that, check the dealer database as there might be someone local you can go through. Otherwise, there a great xray dealers you can order through online without using ebay.
In short, if your going to run this on a smooth surface such as a tennis court, or full out carpet. The M18 is your choice vehicle. If your planning on running wherever you can, you might seek otherwise.

Who wants to order parts for their cars online all of the time? Sometimes parts actually break on the track.
You are comparing hooked up M18s to new 18Rs running at your track. It takes time to dial in a car. Arriving and driving just doesn't cut it.
Speaking of parts durability, I broke a hub on my M18 without even driving it. It dropped from a table and when I went to check the car over before I ran it, the hub was broken. There is no way that you can compare a M18 to the 18R and claim that it is more durable because this is just not true.
I have run my 18R on this carpet track with the layout in the video and was running 11.3 second laps. My car was not setup when I was running as I still needed to make adjustments but haven't returned since. I also ran on rubber tires. When I have time, I will return and dial in foams as well as run my M18 to see how closely the two cars compare. I doubt that the laptimes will differ much but I can't wait to see which car will be faster on the rug with two properly setup cars.
