It really depends on the track, your driving style, and the batteries you have. I can tell you the 6800 is more than enough power for pretty much anything except parking lot speed runs, but its likely too much for off road racing. I think the 5400 is perfect for racing because I can gear it to run as fast or slow as I need for the track Im on. With Lipo that motor screams, and with Nimh its plenty fast too. If its a large track where others are running really fast, and you dont have or want Lipo, you may need the 6800. I have all except the 8000, and I almost always use the 5400. You just need to determine how fast you want to go, then pick the motor that gives you the best gearing options from that. If you buy the 6800 and you have to run a 11 tooth pinion, you have not done a good job.

Yeah I dont like the Losi systems, I have seen a few with trouble so I stay away.
The 18R can handle light off-road use, but big bumps and jumps will make it pretty unstable at any decent speed. A gear cover is available, I think I saw one at TheToyz.com but dont hold me to it!

I only have my 18T in the house, so I cant look at my R to tell you. BUt I think it would work, and it would help some. Make sure you have full suspension travel and a lighter shock oil.

Glad to hear it did well, sorry about the spur. If you plan to keep racing it off-road I think the best suggestion is a slipper, 18B/T arms, axles, links, and tires. If you stripped a spur you either had the mesh set incorrectly, or you were hitting some rough stuff. Unfortunately I dont know of any better tires that will fit those 18R axles. The wider stance of the buggy/truggy gives more stability in rough sections, and tires meant for off-road are available. TheToyz.com has a slipper for the 18 for about $35. If you plan to stay off-road I would invest in it.

the cc 5400 is probably the best bet for racing like everyone suggested
unless you doing like big ovals or something
looks like you already got a setup
but if you're considering the sidewinder
should reconsider and spend a few more bucks on the micro pro

I own both and cant tell a difference, even with the 6800 installed. It looks like its the same controller minus the case and heatsink.
