We use the Losi Insane at our track. It has a better end bell and lasts longer than the stock Slider motor. Speed seems to be the same.

Interesting -- I've noticed the better endbell on these motors, but wondered if they required a gearing change, etc... Are you gearing them the same as the stock RX280 motors? I don't mind changing -- they require set-screw style pinions anyway -- I just want to buy the right one(s)...

OH -- another question -- one local racer tried one, and the motor mounting holes stripped out almost immediately... I normally assume "user error", but he swore he was extremely careful... Are you aware of any hint of weakness there...?

They do require set screw pinions since the shaft is not splined. I have some Losi and Robinson. Robinson better as they have larger set screw. No problems with mounting holes. There are two set of holes in motor can, he may have used the wrong ones. I ran the Losi stock motor for about a month (racing one night a week), had to change brushes twice (Trinity XXX brushes), and it was done. I have now run the Insane for three six week series and it is still as fast as when new. Geared the same as what I ran on the stock motor. This motor can take a lot of heat but it isn't necessary to overgear to be fast.

Last minute thought, I use better quality motor bolts not the stock ones. I also have a washer on each bolt, this is very important.

Thanks! I may have to try one of these... The guy that had the problem with the motor screws IS something of a newbie, but he swore to me that he had not over tightened the screws -- but he might have cross-threaded them or any number of newbie mistakes. I did notice that he was using the original motor screws, and that with the stock setup of a lock-washer and a flat washer, just barely enough of the screw comes through the tranny mounting plate to "catch" the threads in the motor can, and the stock screws sort of taper down toward the end...

I notice you mention the Trinity XXX brushes -- I haven't tried those yet, but I have tried the 'mini-monster' brushes, which seem better than the stock LOSI's... Some locals tried Reedy brushes and had a lot of problems with brushes chipping -- I did some measuring and found the Reedy's to be a few thousandths smaller than the LOSI or Trinity. (FWIW: My digital caliper show the Reedy's as 0.108" square, while the LOSI's are 0.112" and Trinity's are 0.111"...) I think the Reedy's are just enough smaller to allow them to chatter in the RX280 brush hoods, causing the chipping..?

Final question: Who makes the "better quality motor bolts"? Ideally I would like to find good hex socket-head screws, but quality phillips will do... I believe the screws are 2.5mm -- correct?

I think the cap head screws I'm using are made by Du-Bro got em off the hardware rack at my LH.

DuBros are good. You can usually get them at LHS in airplane section.

Stock screws are a no no with both washers. They will work if you are careful with flat washer only.

Trinity XXXs are very hard and seem to last longer and don't chip. The brush channel is actually wider than any brush and that is why getting the spring on straight is critical. If spring is not lined up square, brush will cock and that will create arcing and chipping. Also must make certain the brush wire doesn't have too much solder wick up into it when soldering the brush wire on motor. Too much solder in wire will make it stiff and then the brush can't move in and out smoothly; more arcing and chipping.
