If you follow the model of RC Madness it is a win win situation. Look at the history of the events at Madness and the results....
Yeah, that would be good in a perfect world but they change them every year and primarily in response to a few event sponsoring manufacturers.
It's IMO a horrible example of pandering to the big names, like last year a company came out with a new stretch version of the RC18T and their Team drivers dominated with a product that no one else had access to until after the event. That's not fair! They also had a class just for 18Rs, and while I luved it it was an exclusive class. That doesn't help grow the class or the hobby in my eyes.
Nice to see people debateing thinds without being argumentative, but are lap times comparable between the m18 and the detta tc? I don't own a m18, but I was watching laptimes at duneland saturday. the guys running stock m18s (stock there means 5 cell and fireball) were faster than my detta with vr3 and 6 cell. I wasn't runnning foams and was in stock trim. maybe with some chassis work to the detta or atleast foams things could turn out in the dettas favor. but to put these to cars side by side the difference is large. I truely understand what you are saying, and agree very much. But do you have a suggestion as to size restrictions? I'd love to hear em. maybe if enough people got their opinions heard some rational rules for mini racing would be formed. And thats what I personally want to see. I will continue to watch this thread and look for what I feel would make a good set of road rules and see if a governing body should be formed and if it would work.
Berm, about madness, your right thier rules do draw a large crowd and help promote the mini racing I am very fond of. So I wont even try to bash there rules. I just dont agree with all the class designations. I even agree with some of thier logic, just not all. I feel that since they were the first to host a major event in the states for this scale they do hold some president. But the fact is somebody will try to form a governing body for this typ of racing and I look forward to it.
You drive dettas, so do I. But allowing the detta tc to race with m18's just seems a little off to me. As the good doctor said there needs to be a little wiggle room. But the difference between the detta tc and the m18 is alittle drastic, about the same difference between the tc and the recoil. So some one needs to make a limit of some sort here, and now. Or wiggle room may lead to m18's vs. recoils. And the size difference is huge there.
Good points all, and I agree with almost all of them.
I was reading on another forum where the whole deal of size was being discussed and one poster logged in to the discussion by saying "There are NO 1/18 scale buggies on the market! The Atech xmb4 is very close, and it is WAY smaller than anything else. We may as well just call them 'mini' and run them all together."

I acually read that post and know the man who said it, I watched him spend alot of time figuring sacle dimentions based on a roar rule book. He then measured alot of 18th scale vehicals and the xmb4 was by far the closest thing to scale size for a buggy. At the time it seemed as tho he put alot of work into proving a point. But in retrospect I belive he was right. It apears most producers of mini scale rc's build what they want and call it any scale they want. But the mini-t started this craze and it was a good small scale replica of what was being run in the larger 10th scale class, then assco.jumped in with the 18t. I don't know that I've ever watched 10th scale 4wd trucks race anywhere. And just because thier buggy an truck are the same shouldn't reqire eveyone elses be twinkis except for body and wheels. Granted the detta shares the same chassis and drive train but the buggy and truck are too totally different vehicals. the tc shares a chassis that is simaler but does have differences. And i feel it fell alittle more out of scale than the others, but shouldn't require it's own class. I would rather it run with the recoils than the m18s based on the size of the motor in use. We all know the stock recoil motor is underpowered based on the wieght and performance of the given car. but placing the detta tc in with this car gives us the "wiggle" room to futher develop the class, one in which I would like to see stick around.

Im not sure where your info comes from but it is way off base.....
The dimensional rule was in place for a while before the actual race.
Anyone can and could have made a chassis. Picking on one company who made a chassis to the limits of a spec....well thats racing. Last year they may have had a jump on the competiton so show up this year with your latest and greatest and see was it the chassis or a racers ability to win....
I have seen some awesome rivalries brewing in 1/18 scale for sometime now.
The Northeast vs Mid Atlantic vs The Midwest vs West Coast and maybe we can never totally agree but as long as we can have some good clean fun and exciting competition Im all for it....

Come on now, give me a break. The previous year they were quite specific in their "no stretch wheelbase" rule, and then last year they rather conveniently change it to encompass ONE company's new design who just so happens to be a sponsor who just so happens to not have any available to the retail customers until after the event. Calling pandering was being mild, because in reality it's tantamount to collusion.

All of RCing has been pretty far from what's really "scale" for a long time, and even the larger scales have stretched this and widened that over time so to me it's no different than what's happened in minis.
We may as well just call them 'mini' and run them all together.

theDr, who are you. Just so I know for reference. I think everyone here knows who I am.
Well, to me, it sounds like you are speaking about the Exotek chassis but I could be wrong.
If you want to know the TRUTH...
I was contacted by them, that asked dimentions, I went by what I had the previous year, 165mm wheelbase. That was based on a car that had made the a-main 2 years ago, the Trinity Blade.
So, please tell me, how am I pandering to any one person/company?
And, how did their team drivers dominate? Yes, ONE won the open a-main. He took the lead on the last lap after the leader was hung up. He did well all weekend but did he dominate? How many drivers had this prototype chassis?
Is it fair at ROAR national events when team drivers have special equipment?
Yes, we had a class of 18Rs... Great class, lots of fun, people asked for the class. It helps grow the hobby as a whole. That is a good thing, right?
The rules are re-worked often to make them more fair. They are sent to Losi, AE, Duratrax and more for approval before they are released. They ALL approve them before I post them.

DR do you actually race or are you a keyboard racer???
You have a great vocabulary and the ability to manipulate the facts to suit your agenda....Are you a politician???
Just charge up a few packs show up with your truck and let your trigger finger do the talking.....heck you might even have some fun....

Your facts are all screwed up Rob. Xray was coming out with a new PRO truck and all I did was come out with a chassis to match their wheelbase for the 18T platform. And as Dean mentioned, I contacted him before the event to ask what was the legal limit that I could go to. No way did he alter the rules for me- I strictly followed his rules already set forth and it appeared to me that Xray had already did the same. The reason for the timing of the TEK18X released after the Nats was because I just had sold out of all of my original TEK18's and figured it was a good time to make a few tweaks to the original since I had to make another run of chassis soon.... oh how terrible of me, I know but unlike what you think I'm a very very small player/ company and do have to keep up with the trends to be able to compete with the big guys.

Thanks for helping me clear the air Mike.... It is appreaciated!
Before anyone accuses someone of "pandering" you should know the facts.

My intent was not to offend you Mike (I'll get your name right ), or call out your company. I was mearly stating the obvious and the facts as I saw them.
The previous year I requested rules information regarding that race, and was forwarded information that clearly stated that "any deviation from the 'stock' wheelbase of any vehicle would not be allowed" -- I had planned on something similar and was told it was a no-go -- and then thought it odd that it was then changed the following year to coincide with the release of your new chassis. That "fact" is not screwed up.
All I have been saying all along is that there needs to be some "wiggle-room" or fudge-room in the rules for all mini's so as to allow the room for growth and midification of the class and the scale.
I have nothing against your company and have personally purchased three of your cars, so it's not like I'm pointing the finger at you or hate your stuff -- which, by the way, is nothing but first rate.
By the way the name is William, but you can call me Bill.

IT'S ALL GOOD, let's go racing.
When the race first started yes, we said stock wheelbase. We did infact change that because of the deviation between the various cars and came out with actual dimentions.
Please, look at 1/10 2wd off road racing. Look at the size of the original RC10, JRX2 and Ultima. Then look at the size of the vehicles some 5 and 10 years later...Look at them now... MUCH change.
There are a few changes for the off road race this year that I am sure Duneland/Ron will like. He brought something to my attention and while it was too late to act on it last year it will be used this year.
