I'm sure this has been covered over and over. But I wanted to raise it up again, Im a little torn over which is the overall better race performer.
I understand the spool gives more on power steering and better braking. In fact I liked the way the car drove.
But I also found it also strips gears very easily in an 18R, spur and input gears. Anyone else experience this?
I was surprised I didn't see any comments on this being everyone always claims to run spools especially in the 18R's.
In one instance, it was obviously because of an 'accident'. I hit someone parked at the start/finish line finishing my last lap. Ok, that shouldn't happen anyway.
But I also had gear damage from regular 'beatin and bangin'. Also my front tires locked into the drive pins, making tire changes really difficult.
I like the power on traction of the spool, but I didn't like having to worry about stripping a gear if some whacko hit me in a race.
I only use a one-way or spool when running very fast open asphalt tracks with rubber tires. I've tried the one-way on a large carpet track with foam tires and broke CVD shafts and other front axle parts. The incrased traction of carpet tracks on foam tires equates to a lot of torque on the drivetrain. The spool will give you almost the same "pull" through a corner as a one-way but you'll also get good braking with a spool. Howver, you never want to run a spool on a short track with a lot tight turns. For me, front "diff" choice really boils down to track surface, track size and how much brake you'll need. Just my 2 cents.

Thoughts?
My gears stripped usually when I slammed the brakes hard at the end of the straight (funky track layout) but since I went to the steel GPM gears up front problem solved
The spool is fully locked, no differential action between inside and outside wheels. A one-way free wheels off power and is locked like a spool on power.
So the gears strip because the spool doesn't give during massive deceleration (hard braking or a crash). Since the spool doesn't absorb the energy the gears do and 'strrrippp'. You instantly have a loud car!
Thanks cla5675, Im going back to a diff setup this weekend.

Throw the spools in the trash. If you want to be competitive go with the ball diffs, front and rear. Team Associated makes really good ball diffs. They're adjustability makes setting up the cars handleing much easier (usually tighter in the front and looser in the rear). I also use Associated Stealth diff lube when rebuilding my ball diffs. It works great. I run my rc18r indoors on carpet with foam tires.....with Exoteks "R18" conversion on-road kit. It's awesome. Also, try to stay away from those "wackos" during a race. It's easier on the body too. Good luck.......let me know how it works out.
