mini cooper parts QUESTIONS???

Hey guys i have a question about ordering parts for the mini coopers...A friend of mine ordered some parts for his mini from a site that is from Hong Kong and he got a e-mail saying he needs to show proof of residency of the U.S. like a drivers license or passport, but he is nervous to give that info as i would be...does this seem legit or questionable?????any info would greatly be appreciated

If it's dealing with places like PrecisionRC or Dinball(RCMart), then I wouldn't worry, I've done that with them & it worked out fine. Shame though, that sometimes we have to spend that much on shipping for small items that domestic shops should be able to carry.....
