The rc18b is very reliable, great for bashing and with some key parts it can be a solid racer, but not necessary. Hop up parts are plentiful. High speed runs are a blast! Can use a variety of brushless combos. Lots of lipo pack to choose from.
The vendetta is easier to drive, great for racing out of the box. But very fragile. Must have some upgrade right away to be solid. Uses standard servos which is a plus. Steering system is better than the rc18. No ball diffs. Duratrax upgrade parts are expensive! Lipo packs that fit are hard to find. No foams for carpet racing, unless you use 1/10 scale foams which are a little to tall. Limited selection on brushless motors with 2.3mm shaft.
if you plan on racing on carpet.....get the rc18b
if you plan on racing in dirt get the Vendetta
the kyosho mini inferno is 1/16 scale and because of its size some places either do not allow them or make them race only against the same vehicles.(due to size and the amount of batteries 8 @ 9.6v)
The mini inferno takes some $$$ to get it fast and reliable.
The rc18b and the Vendetta run pretty good out of the box only needing a few upgrades......

I have both and they are both great!
Have fun either way.
-I wouldnt say it is very fragile but it does have a FEW weak parts..... the buggy has weak plaster cvd's and out drives and steering knuckles (you can buy alloy knuckles from duratrax or from rcmart.com which are more affordable)
-true , no ball diffs , bot you can buy ball diffs later... the gear diffs are very very smooth and they are durable with the stock motor and VR3 but once you get into brushless then you may want to switch,,,, upgrade parts are expensive but duratrax isnt the only maker for upgrades,,, go to rcmart.com and look under ANDERSON and then look at the hop ups for the MB4.
-there are a few lipo packs that fit but with the detta and detta ST dominating the race scene , more items will be available.
-a lot of guys use rubber anyway for carpet
-BL motors in 2.3mm shafts are limited true but with more and more ppl using 400 can brushless motors with 3.2mm shafts,, your choice of pinions are greater than that of a 2mm shaft,,robinson racing makes metric pinions of various sizes and they are made of steel so they last longer than alloy
check out my "vendetta brushless reviews"
I have a rc18 also and since having my detta my rc18 has been sitting in the closet,,, havent touched it since july 2006

I dont really like the detta, I was leaning towards the RC18, but I can get the Mini Inferno for about $50 cheaper.
I'm just starting out so for me messing around in my col de sac and then possibly racing a few months down the line, how would the performance differ between the RC18 and the half 8? (besides the fact that the RC 18 would be easier to upgrade)
Bermbuster mentioned it all above. Out of the box, the B is going to be much faster and raceworthy than the mini inferno. You can spend the money to get the inferno up to spec, but you run into the possibility of being disallowed because it is a different scale, and takes more cells.
Edit: Also, there is a Radioshack Pro-pulse since your worried about price. Its somewhat similiar to th B, but the upgrades for it come at a larger premium to offset the price, and you can only get them online or through radioshack stores.

here is the deal....
rc18b comes w a better battery, esc and tx/rx.....comes w ball diffs
the vehicle holds up well but the steering is wishy washy........
my son drives his well.....
the vendetta has a better stock motor and servo.
the vehicle is prone to breaking dog bones and front knuckles.....
the battery space is tight.....
the buggy tracks and jumps like a pro.
half 8 needs oil shocks, bearings front steering knuckles and a stronger motormount for starters. It uses a combi esc/rx and a 4 wire servo.
use saddle pack batteries 9.6v makes it heavy and slow....
the buggy tracks and jumps like a pro but it is slower.....
when you hop it up to make it faster the center diff/ gear diffs self destruct.
hey dj jae likes his dettas and he makes them do amazing things.....
he likes them and thats his biased opinion (you asked for it)
whatever you get it will break and it will make you mad at times.....
Just remember whatever you decide will cost you in the long run.....
I say buy em both........
