You know, there is another option as well. A Tamiya Tamtec. They even sell a rolling chassis without a body, but with oil shocks so you can choose the type you like.
From what I have seen and driven of them.. They are durable little buggers that come with slipper clutches, bearings, ball diffs, and universals. They are 2wd though like a traditional buggy.
make sure you do your homework,,, cause if you plan on racing it theres a lot of things you need to do to get it to ride on rails,,,, and if you see a detta on the track that day,,, you might not want to race ... im just messing with you, as a current owner of both I have had my shares of headaches with the rc18 just go ahead and,,,,,,
buy MIP diffs
MIP cvd's
a better servo
better steering system (I forgot the company)
new electronics and motor
better shocks
that is all I could think of,,, have fun rebuilding it

well i was joking also.. i just wanted to see what he would say.. cause tony phalen.. did a lot to his rc18t and it didnt reach those speeds..
If you watched his speed runs the rc18 after a certain speed will become airborn.....(add wings jk)...Im curious as what it will take to get it to go faster...I know somebody will. He also used a 4 cell lipo mamba25/6800
combo.....bodies w more downforce and some added weight might be the trick.....what do you guys think???
I've had my RC18T for over 2 years. Many ups and downs, lots of downs... get a Driven Productions gear dust cover if you want to go anyplace resembling off-road. The steering is inconsistent, but fixable with upgrades (DP draglink, etc.). It is also very spin-out happy, so it definitely has the small car feel to it. It is very fast and fun with brushless, just don't nail the throttle too hard so you don't smoke the diffs (that clicking...).
Another worthy consideration is the Mini LST 2 which should be out any day. I have the Mini LST which has been good to me with the diffs so far, but many have had lots of issues and the steering sucks worse than the RC18 (and that's saying a lot... this thing does not like to drive straight). The MLST2 sounds like it addresses these weaknesses pretty well, but we'll see how it holds up. Also, this thing is BEEFY and has great suspension travel, so it feels much bigger than an RC18 so it is very nice on rough terrain. I recommend the MIP center ball diff for much improved 4WD power distribution. Also, technically it is a 16th scale vehicle (compare wheelbase and track to Mini Inferno), but it is not classified as such. I'm not sure how good this thing is for racing as it is kinda porky, but it is great for bashing. I love driving mine.
At this point in time, I plan on picking up a Vendetta as my next purchase to see if it is all that. It seems to address a lot of the problems that the RC18 had (gear cover makes it off-road worthy, improved steering and tracking, etc). I would also love to get a Mini Inferno 09 (the nitro), but it is very expensive ($399) and for that price, you could get a decent 8th scale buggy.
I haven’t seen his speed runs, you wouldn’t happen to have a link would you?
I finally tested out my FT 18b with the 3cell lipo I bought and all I could say is wow. It seems mo matter how fast I get it going before I try to give it full throttle the front wheels just come right up off the ground. This was with 12/55 gearing and 26mm TC wheels. I have a lot of work ahead of me if I am going to get it to be controllable with the 3 cell. Going to play around with other shocks I have to try and get the CG lower first.
i was running 8000kv with a 3cell lipo and 19/51 gearing with tc wheels and it was running TC shocks, standard servo to keep it going ina straight line,no body cause everything was on the lower deck and was so low and the whole car was balanced......so if u put it on a needles tip right in the centre it will balance perfectly
i stopped runing this setup awhile ago so i can have more offroading.....i miss offroad lol and the C4 i was using eventualy disinegrated......magnet snapped into bits......so now i got another 5400kv,c4 8000kv (dont ask me why it cam in a trade lol)and a wraith 7k or (7000kv for the dummies)
by far the wraith with 1800mah lipo and 14/55 gearing gives u 30+ minutes of runtime! its GREAT!
i have a full alloy mini inferno if u are interested.....not the 09 and i mean full alloy....only thing that aint alloy is the chassis
