move the lower front shock location out if you are looking for more onpower steering.

I picked up a roller recoil and have a few questions.

First is for duneland: I read your ultrafly recommendation but those seem to be discontinued here in the US. I found a good (and cheap) replacement here that should be pretty similar spec wise. My question is about using outrunner motors in cars though, are they any less likely to cog due to different design or is it still based on gearing/battery like it is for inrunners? What ESC did you use, mamba25? Lastly, what gearing did you use on the 3200kV ultrafly?

Second is general, the servo saver either seems broken or just super loose no matter how much I tighten the screw. I get about 5mm of play at the point where the knuckle turnbuckle connects to the bellcrank. Just seems like a flawed design to me, but I read that some people have inserted washers to create more spring tension than you can stock. Since I'm not sure where this car will fit in at the track (I'm sticking to 18th with the rest of the micro crowd unless) I don't want to invest in a new servo + saver so does anyone know of a higher quality saver that will fit the spline of the stock servo?

Great thread btw, has the most info on the recoil I've been able to find on the net.

I just solved the prob with the stock servo saver. I found a micro servo saver made by Futaba in a bag at the hobbyshop. Inside there's two springs. Just for the heck of it I took one of the Futaba springs and then took the Recoils servo saver spring and placed them side by side. The Futaba spring is WAY stiffer.

I swapped out just the spring and tightened down the Recoil's servo saver. Works like a charm.

the Recoil's stock servo spring is too soft.

As I recall, I geared the Ultrafly in the naborhood of 20t. That is on a small track with a 2c LiPo. I have not found outrunners to be either more or less prone to hesitations at start-up. In general they are more efficient, run cooler and have more torque than inrunners. You may find it hard to gear for speed on larger tracks. I am currently running a Multiplex 400, it is the best I have tried so far.
Xray servo saver is the best I have found for any of the small vehicles.
I use the Mamba esc. The newer ones are 35 amp (still says 25 on the packaging). Quark 33 amp car is an excellent choice too.

Ah, I have a permax in my vendetta ST, a great motor for sure. If my stock brushed motor dies I can always transplant Any suggestions for pinions that will work with a 3.2mm shaft? Anyway, if I run the recoil on a track, it will be a 1/10 track so I'd probably want a bit more speed. I found another motor here with higher kV (not far off from the 5100 permax) but its larger than the ultrafly and the first outrunner I picked out. Can should be 38mm or so long so a bit shorter than the stock motor, but a bit larger and about 20g heavier than the other outrunners. Amazing how cheap the outrunner motors from Asia can be, and with so many air guys using them they seem to be reliable enough. I also like the efficiency and other positive traits so I'm tempted to try one out (but not tempted enough to try a name brand that carries a 2-3x cost).

As Canuck asked, does the xray fit on the stock servo (I wasn't clear from your recommendation)?

I'd heard about the mamba thing, but I think both of mine are older. I'm still waiting for the rumored potential redesign that is half the size with the same specs!

Thanks to everyone for the info!

Might also be a good option? 2mm shaft so it will fit the stock pinion. Its a bit longer than the Aon 4900 so it should be a bit torquier and stand up to the larger car better.

Also, I was wondering about the outrunners running cooler, wouldn't that be that the can is cooler because the windings (the part that heats up) are on the inner portion of the motor, not the can? Seems inrunners should deal better with heat since the heat is communicated to the can to dissipate heat. I guess inrunners being a more open can design might help keep the windings cool too though.

bigb11.....I was using a Mamba 35 speedo / 8000kv / 11t pinion....

Duneland.......Yes the newer speed controllers are 35's but have the old 25 sticker on them due to not getting them made up before shipping out the new speedos.........

cdog4w.....You can tell if you have new ones by looking at the bottom of the speedo....The red and black wires will travel across the full length of the board.....versus the older ones where the wires are just soldered into the end of the board........

FYI TO ALL!!!!! We are always working to make things better for basher and racers alike.....To be continued......

Default Mamba25

Can a racer exchange or have an upgrade done on an older Mamba25? I have 2 of them and they operate differently leading me to believe that the one I have is 1st generation. I know some companies have an exchange/upgrade policy. tia, Nick A

I use that saver & recomend it, but I don't think it fits the stock servo (don't remember for shure). Stock servo is pretty anemic anyway.
