Kenji,
The stock motors are disapointing. The hoods poorly constructed out of inferior material, brushes themselves are suspect, shunts are too short, springs suck, etc. I cut down some reedy 1/10 brushes for mine, but it still went south on me after a faily short time.. Happened when I was at Strictly.
The motors we are running now are; CIS14174 (Carisma r380 racing motor) with EFLM1910 adapter ring (makes for an effortless installation). Motors are $12.95 and the adapter is $2.99. The cut-out in the chassis has to be lengthened to accomodate the longer motor.

Hey duneland,

Are there any other brushed motors that will work in the Recoil? Do you know which brushless motors will work?

Any of the 380-400 sized motors will work with the adapter I mentioned.
They have 2.3mm shafts, so Carisma pinions should be used. I have easilly drilled out Robinson 1/18 pinions that come with 2mm shafts. Pitch is .5 module.
I have run an Electrafly outrunner in my Recoil. It mounts in without modification, has 3200kv rating. 2 Cell LiPo performance is in line with stock performance. 3 cell performance is very fast! I haven't tried any other bl motors yet. I have been letting the class grow before thinking about a mod class.

How much of the chassis has to be cut out? Do you carry the motor and adapter?

I had to lengthen the slot forward about 5mm or so. Quick work with a coarse sanding drum/dremel.
Yes I have the motor & adapter in stock. Part numbers are listed above, so you can get them easily from you LHS. Let me know if you want me to ship.
Performance is NOT better with this motor. About same as kit motor, just looking for more reliabillity. It is Legal as a stock motor at my track & I am of the opinion that a 380 should have been in this car from the start.

Default Great car

Not trying to sell one, but I'd be interested if any of you guys wanted to trade a bone stock recoil for an M18. I'll post this in forsale forum too. Nobody is racing this car here yet and they have a lot of xray/micro racing. I would like to run one. PM me if interested.

I got a recoil yesterday and I was very pleased with it for the price. After screwing around with it for a few hours I couldn't help from upgrading a bit. I stole the mamba 8000 outta my now unused mini-t and changed the radio to a lil better one. Tuned the speedcontroller on the laptop down to get a feel for the girl b4 I blast it into something . This thing was running super nice and I like these alot better than the 1/18 scale mini's i've had. The only issue I had is they're cheap diffs, after 2 hours with the brushless the rear diff locked up. When I got it apart(which wasn't fun-isnt the most worker friendly car ) I found one of the spiders gears melted inside .They are all plastic gears and casing,a aftermaket diff would be nice. I also noticed there was no(bone dry)diff lube in it at all. Checked the front diff and the same thing no lube. I hope this was just a oversight on my model alone...then again it wasn't made for a brushless system. I will get it to work in time I'm sure, this car is going to be a blast. Its a welcome addition to my RC family!

I too have a chance to run/see the real thing yesterday @ the LHS, and I have to say....it did changed my mind about this $200 RTR car (I was not impress from the look of the car on the web before)
The body is very good painted and construct....the car is well build, quite a lot of stuff are in the car for $170. And of course, just cannot expect too much for the same price...
But this car definitely belongs to stock "stock" racing....I cannot see the car can handle anything faster (motor)....like someone mentioned, putting burshless/high turn motor, lipo and stuff onto this car in stock form is a waste, at least I don't see it will work unless X amount of $$$ of options onto the car first...

I would think this will be a great stock race car....if the track allow ONLY chances is the motor (by using a little longer lasting motor like Venom Fireball that is very much the same class as the stock one...) and keep the cost low, and allow radio upgrade only....it should be fun to run. (how come they are not releasing the KIT version..?)

thanks for the specific info Duneland on the motor.

I Just had the shop order a bunch of the motor plates and a few of the motors. I know at least three of us are swapping over to the Carisma 380 motor. I'm pretty sure anyone who will be racing will be doing the same.

I have no interest in turning this into an overpriced mod class...but I refuse to deal with brushed mirco motors, just to much of a hassle. Im dropping a mild brushless motor in it as soon as I get one.

Got mine for $140 so it was a good buy as I was concerned, I wouldn't have payed 200 bones for it. I don't think putting a brushless in a car like this was wastefull. I too love the bonuses of brushless set-ups. The failure of the diff was from design not the motor. I got replacement diff pack for $10 (2 diff sets) and greased them this time. So far its fine, I can hear the crappy plastic spider gears whizzing inside, but atleast they're not melting this time. I know the 8000kv is over kill but until I can get a stock class brushless I'm using it. You know how it is when you have extra stuff lying around that will fit in a new model. You have to tinker, its in all us RC nuts nature

For those who wants extremely long runtimes, the Thunderpower 2 cell 2100 MaH LiPo battery fits in the Recoil perfectly:

Starting to have slight problems with the car, but so far it's all electrical related. The stock motor's brushes kept on sticking, seriously looking at a brushless setup that will run close to the stock setup, perhaps a Mamba 25 + Align 430L brushless motor.

This Apogee is less expensive, 20C vs. 15C and should fit too.

Apogee at TH
