Where is Strictly R/C? Some of us down-staters would be interested in coming up for a visit.
Jonny....the track is in just practice mode right now. it's a brand new place. they just got their I-Lap race timing system and are learning it. Racing should begin in March with a date TBA.
I'm assuming you want to race and not just practice.
If you have an itch to race smaller scale, immediately, and are looking for fun and some competition, Duneland Hobbies has a great 1/18th scale track and a racing program that has been up and running for a long time now.
I'm looking forward to where StrictlyRC racers will be traveling to Duneland and hopefully vice-a-versa for some traveling competition. Both tracks are about the same size and both specialize in smaller scale.
But.....if you are looking to just check it out and do some practicing, right now, by all means come on up.
Kenji....how well does the stock radio/ESC/Rec and everything work...like range... is that what you are using? And what nights is Strictly RC going to be racing when they start up? This car looks like fun and if they are going to have a box stock spec class I would like to get one. Is there any rules on battery size or capacity? Does strictly RC have parts in stock for them?
Kevin...I'm not sure where in the City you hail from? Northside or Southside?
I'm suggesting you stop by either Duneland or Strictly and spend an hour and try both the Recoil and the Carisma. Both stores and tracks have "house cars" that you can test out. Knowing your racing skillz you may also want to try the 1/18th Robotronics Scalpel out too. If you are going to make a special trip to either call ahead or call me if you will be at Strictly and I'll meet up with you.
Me and the boys currently own a Recoil, a Scalpel, and a BRP Supercar V2. You are always welcome to run our stuff.
One of the customers at StrictlyRC, Boss Hoss, recalled a blast from his past that I thought might be fun. Especially for veteran racers. A class of racing where the cars are owned by the hobbyshop and racers are assigned a car by picking straws. I thought it would work great using the 1/14th Carisma, at StrictlyRC.
Four cars with their 27MHZ radios sit on the table. Racers pick straws and get a car. The only thing you can do is charge the batteries and minimally adjust the radio. Then race. Each round you pick straws again or just swap cars for all three qualifiers and the main.

I think veteran racers would have a blast.
That would be a great equalizer.
I've been looking at putting together a similar series with 1/18th scale. I'm looking at using the M18 as the platform and building all with low kV brushless motors. Figure with brushless, the motors would be more maintenance free and the variation in their aging wouldn't be an issue. Going low kV would save on aging more, give longer runtimes and not be so hard for newbies to handle. Plus hopefully, the lower speeds would not be as hard on the cars. Might go as low as 3000kV.
Also was going to go with Lipos. They generally run very flat and very equal. Found a source for 10C 2S 1250mAh Lipos for $17. Should have plenty of power for the low kV motor.
Still trying to decide on the radio. I want something that will be very durable because lots of people will handle them. Wish I could find one with a "whip" antenna so I don't have to deal with antennas snapping off. Thought about 2.4Ghz...but that really adds to the cost.
With a Carisma, using 4 cars, a hobbyshop could do it for about 300 bucks. And the cars take a heck of a beating, and you know guys will be knocking each other around just because the cars don't break easily.
I can imagine me racing with Nexus. We're neck and neck with 10 seconds left. Coming out of the front sweeper I just stop on the rug. He wrecks, I go ahead along to take the main!

The M18's will have higher initial cost...especially with the brushless and Lipo, but I'm looking at using a smaller area and something maintenance free. In my experience, M18's are nearly indestructable. I've beat the bejabbers out of one with a 6800kV 3S Lipo brushless setup. Only ever broke a steering arm after hitting a tree at 40mph.
This reminds me of the go-kart racing I do with my son. When we go to the track we never know which kart we will be assigned. My son is 50lbs lighter than me so he has that advantage no matter which kart he gets. In our last race we were swapping positions for the last 3 laps till he tries to go around me on a tight turn and carries to much speed in and puts it into the wall. Fun, fun, fun...but those kart races cost $20 bucks a pop....times two or three or four...depending on how many of my son's come along.
I think the Carismas would be a blast....rear wheel would make it a bit more challenging for the newbies. Bet you'd see a lot of spinning. :-)
Do you think foams would be more durable in the long run?
Thanks for the info. Place looks nice. Guess I'll have to get a Recoil so I can join the fun. You should get a gas sedan while you're at so you can run with Ron and I this summer over at Leisure.
Socko
Yeah the place looks like fun I think Im going to try it out. No Gas sedans or anything like that for me....Im just not into that maybe nitro offroad if anything but thats even way out there.
Gary....Thanks for the info....I wouldnt want foams on these things anyway if or when I get one I want to race/play with it as cheaply as I can. The Car looks really neat I think Im going to have to go to Strictly RC and check one out.....then grab one Im sure soon after.
Kenji....I live in Palatine for now but I work in Niles and I grew up on the Northside/North West side so I know the area where the track is located. This would be something that I wouldnt mind picking up so I could run over there after work and run a few packs or race 1 night during the week for something to do. What are the hours over there are they open sundays? I would be all about the BOX Stock class...no need to make this expensive....or the drawing straws class that sounds like fun as well.

Duneland or Gary....will the Carisma bodies mainly this one F360 fit the Recoil chassis? That F360 is sweet looking.

Kevin, I think it fits, I'll check it out when I get to the store. Problem is, I don't think you can get that body without buying a Carisma! They do offer a Farrari 360, but not in that trim.
Disaster, The carisma 2wd car hooks up like mad on my track (tires 'squeal' around the corners). Track surface is canvas painted with water-based deck stain. They also hook-up very well on traditional Ozite tracks.
Your bl/xray house-owned class sounds great! Somebody win the lottery?

I compared another Carisma body to my Recoil...like Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. The Recoil is too wide. I didn't check the Ferrari, but I was looking at that one and the F430 body too. The other issue is that the rear deck of the body is so low, I think the shock tower or body mounts might be too tall.

So do they offer a clear 360 body that will work on the Recoil?

Thanks for the info Gary if you or anyone else have a chance to play around with it and find a way to get one to fit please share the info.

Sorry to take this a little off-topic..ie...another car...very interested in discussing a "stock" series.
Don't get the deals RC shops get but with some shopping around I can keep the price down.
Here is the cost breakdown.
M18 stock platform. $100
SP25A brushless ESC $35
Feigao 200 can low kV brushless $25
2S 1250mAh Lipo $17
Futaba 2PL AM Radio or Multiplex FM 301 $60-$70
I'm still working out the track details. I've got a rollable, moveable carpet track but it is a hassle to setup. Also have RCP track but it is small and expensive and I hate how the bumpers bring the cars to an instant halt. Been looking at building my own track out of foam floor tiles (same material as RCP) but with bumpers made out of gardening edge trim.
I thought of actually going smaller...looked into Mini-Z's but experienced a lot of breakages.
1/10th was too huge...would need too much area to set up track. I'd like to be able to have a mobil track. Would love to be able to take it to events...for charity...maybe even profit down the road.
Hoping for a "set it and forget it" setup. Looking at installing a cover over radio to avoid inexperienced customers messing with the setups.
Other expenses....rechargeable radio packs and a few chargers. Extra Lipos for the cars and Lipo chargers. Spare parts. Extra bodies. Tires.
Big expense...transponder system....laptop...printer. Not sure if I want to dump that much into it.
Looking at it as a fun way to bring people into the hobby and it would be nice if I could recoup my expenses.
