Hey guys,

I finally finished my FT 18T.

I turned everything to aluminium and carbon.

GPM carbon chassis
GPM front and rear diff housings
Integy arms uprights, shock towers, servo holder, bumper, rear toe mount.
MIP CVDs
AE MT wheels and tyres
Novak Micro GT
Orion Baja motor
Futaba 3103 servo

It looks awesome and is a lot stiffer than the standard gear.

My dilema is I put the first pack through it just an hour ago. Free revved it for a couple of mins with com drops to run the motor in. It got REAL hot...

Anyway, I took it for a run on a fresh battery after the motor had cooled... When I pulled the trigger, it took off fairly slowly and wound up to top speed, which was quite slow and disappointing. Rather than sprouting into life and taking off... After about 2mins of running the motor was bloody hot and the pack was warm too. So I let it cool. Whilst letting it cool I changed the gear ratio from the small spur and big pinion to the big spur. Keeping the big pinion. I double checked the mesh on the pinion to spur making sure to keep a tiny gap so there isn't too much friction from too tight a mesh. I also pulled the diff covers off to make sure the mesh of the diff gears were free. They had just the right amount of back lash. I checked all wheels and shafts. Making sure all were free. There is no tightness or friction.

It doesn't roll as good as my HPI Pro 2 (with no motor in it) But I just put this down to being shaft driven...

Anyone got any ideas?

I'm worried if I run it any more I'll burn the motor or speedy out...

PLEASE HELP???

I should add everything is brand new... If that makes a difference....

Are these Baja motors any good? I figured being an Orion motor it's be half decent.

I ran the DP steering link yesterday for the first time and it works very well. Between this and CompetitionX's servo saver mod, I have no slop or weak steering now.

Nice work, DP!

ok i wanted to give a updateas to how cool my rc18b is now, i ordered the hex connectors that crabboy recommended, but after looking how far the axle sticks out i was worried the car would get too narrow so i ordered 2 sets. well when i put the one set on the car it was just slightly narrower than the stock wheels. well i wanted to make it wider and i ordered 2 sets. so i drilled them and epoxied them together and bam mini wheel extenders. the wheels still have the axles sticking out past the hub about 2-2.5mm so overall the width of the crimefighters tire is about in between the stock tires. this would be an awsome oppertunity to manufacter some mini wheel extenders cause after driving my mini with the crimefighter tires all i can say is wow.

the tires have raised the ride ht. which will make it handle rough tracks better as well as providing a killer tread pattern. with proper wheel extenders to remove any axle sticking out it would raise the ride ht. even further and the width would help with stability. with the larger tires when the car goes up on its nose the tires are tall enough to keep pulling instead of the nose sticking in. i can't wait to try it on a real track.

I ran that motor for 1 qualifier and threw it in the trash. It was slower then the stock motor that came with it. Went in and bought a Trinity Cobalt 16t. Ran 1 race, it sucked and gave it away. Went brushless and will never go back.
You never said what gear you were running for the pinion, but I wouldn't use anything bigger then 13t with that motor.

Great!

Thanks for that... I think.. hahaha

Nah thanks!

The car seems to roll fairly freely. So there is something wrong... Looks like I might have to go the Mamba route...

With the normal battery packs what sort of run time am I looking at. I don't want something PSYCO!!! But something really QUICK. If I have interpreted the information correctly i think I want the 6.x k setup... Not sure exactly which one.

Which one did you choose?

I won't be racing it, mainly running around the street and general bashing. It's a bugger coz I just bought the micro GT for it.... Might be able to palm it off...

Many thanks for your help!

Cheers

Yeah, I'm Cypriot. LOL

Which Brushless did you get?

I'm thinking that this is the only way to go... The Baja is freakin crap!!!!! I mean I just can't get over how hot it gets... Damn rip off crap!!!!!

The car looks so good but it just goes like crap!!!! It has really turned me off the car... If I didn't buy the bling for it I'd have sold it already.... Too much coin spent on it but... Mind you if I got offered the right money I'd probably take it...

Is there any good brushed motors out there that are decent?

I am running the Mamba 6800 setup. Run time is awesome, and it runs cool sticking with stock gearing. Its quick too. I would say with a 1100 pack run times are 20-25 minutes.

Never ran a brushed motor that ran half as good, and I have tried them all. The stock motor was pretty much the best, so you can get an idea there. This is my second 18T I went brushless with.
