Default ESC Noob question?

I just got my onraod TC running. I have a HPI Sprint 2 Sport. All stock. I am using a 2s 20c lipo. It is a 15t motor and stock HPI ESC, SC-15 forward w/reverse. I am new to onraod and dont know the specs on the ESC but I was wondering about upgrading the ESC sence I am running a lipo battery. I know Novak is a good company for ESC but what I am looking for I have no idea.

Everything seems to be for brushless and my motor is not. Will a brushless ESC work for a brushed motor or not? Will i need to upgrade motor, reciever too? The car is plenty fast for me right now and I am not looking to compete just have fun without damaging my car. I have noticed that after a few minutes of running that the ESC gets hot.

So if someone could please help me it would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks guys in advance.

I'd recommend looking up the esc's manual. Some run both some only brushless, some brushed only. If your just running around on local streets etc. Mamba systems are great for having fun and you can't beat the price. Also check out the new viper systems. Racing is another story..

If it was me and in my budget Id go with a sensored system only because it seems most if not all on road classes require it in case you decide to start racing. I know when i was a basher I never thought id like actually racing....till I went to a track...it was all over then lol.

Off road me and my sons always have run Castle systems which were sensorless. But In our On road Class (VTA) its a sensored class with certain allowed ESC's.

I have found alot of the Brushless ESC's will work on both Brushless and Brushed but as stated already, look up the manual online of the esc's your looking at and you can see if they will do both.

you got to decided sensor or sensorless and boost / no boost... yeah that another techy term.

I have heard roar is going non boosted. not sure what that means and if current boosted esc will be legal in the future. this is another thing to consider since you making an investment.

if you are looking at staying at a "spec" racing level. then non boosted or esc with a blinky mode is the way to go. these range from the Novak GTB, havoc, gtb 2 etc, to speed passion citrix stock spec, LRP etc. You can also consider a "higher" end programable speedo like a Tekin RS, LRP, Speed Passion, Viper, Novak Kinetic etc.these can made into spec as well

I would first think about what class of racing I am interested in, is it a stock non ramping non boosted class or are you interested in ramping/boosted classes? The non boosted/no ramping tend to be gaining in popularity plus make you ready to run VTA, and or USGT which are aimed at entry level racers and also experienced level by "equalizing" hardware through spec equipment.

You can actually get a speedpassion citrix stock spec ESC with a 17.5 or 13.5 or 11 turn motor for $99.99 from A main and others. I seen used citrix here for sale at $50

I am sure you can get combos from Novak

It all depends on what you want to do with the car. Novak makes a smart stop that will shut the ESC off when you hit low voltage on the lipo. It gets solderd on to the battery connectors and the ESC plugs into it and it plugs into the RX so when the battery hits low voltage this cuts off signal to the ESC making the esc think your stuck at neutral throttle.

Adversly yes you could go with a new ESC or new ESC and motor. And depending on what you want to do with it would depend on what I would suggest to you.

If you plan on Racing touring cars I'd say Tekin RS and a Duo3 motor, if you want to run USGT I'd say go with a Novak Havok 21.5 system, I wouldn't know what to suggest for a quick and easy Vintage setup.

If you just want to play on the street I'd say spend the $25 for the novak smart stop and be done with it

definitly install a lipo cut off like the smart stop. If you drain the lipo too far it can ruin it.

Thanks and yeah I am looking into them its just hard b/c i dont solder and dont own any of the stuff to solder. I am starting at square one with on road and i am way behind lol. Castle and novak seem to have some decent prices for esc that have a cut off built in(unless I am reading wrong) and the esc seem to do both brushed and brushless. So we will see I may just wait till I have a chance after the initial Army training to really put a bunch into my TC.
Thanks again man I appreciate all the help.

No problem.

Good luck with Basic and AIT. I am also in the Army. I was active duty for awhile and now in the reserves but activated. I was deployed last year and injured in Afghanistan. I was medivaced in November and now in the wounded warrior program, so still on active duty from home.

When active I was a 63D (which is now a 91P) Self propelled Field artillery systems mechanic. Basically worked on 109 howitzers and every other track vehicle except the M1 and Bradley.

Now Im an 88M (PLS truck driver) because it is what I had to do to make sure I got on the deployment, so just took whatever I needed.

Ive got the scores for any job in the army so once im healed and out of the wounded warrior program Im going to re-class again...just not sure what to yet.

I hear ya man sounds good. I was going for EOD when I started the process..But I am red green color blind and they said no LOL. So I took 13D b/c it puts me out there and I still get to be apart of all the fun.

My plan is to go career and try to climb rank as far as I can.
I am part of the Future Soldiers program right now so that should help me.

School School School. Civilian and military. The army is ultimately focused on education and PT. Once in and at 1st duty station, start taking college courses ASAP. Education and PT is where you gain your promotion points.

Right now the min points for ALL MOS's are through the roof cause their wanting to down size. Max Pt test's and get all the schooling you can.
