Default GO-RC On-Road Racing at Lanier Speedway

This was originally posted on another thread, thought it would be better to start it on a new one.

Went to the meeting last night at the Lanier Sdwy quarter midget track. I was very impressed with what I saw....in fact the more I saw the more excited I got! While this facility is almost perfect for the oval RCer's there is potential for the on-road as well.

There's an area of new and smooth asphalt next to the oval track that's 150'x60'. It's completely fenced in with enough extra area for the drivers stand and pit lane. It's perfect for the 1/10th cars and with the right design would work for the 1/8th. The man in charge says we can paint in our lanes but would have to dismantle the lane boards, as this is a staging area for the racecars. Maybe with a little persuasion we could seal the asphalt for super low tire wear. As is now it would be like the surface of the Bowl.

Anyway I think it's more than worth the try. As for the cost we would split it with the oval guys. More than likely the race fee would have to be $20; at that we would need a minimum of 13 racers to pay this then the rest is profit for the club. There is power and toilets with plenty of pit space.

I know we considered the HobbyTown lot for the exposure, but what scares me is being able to control the spectators around the track. Also setting up the track would be considerably harder at HT. At this Lanier location the outer barrier boards would be able to attach to the existing fence and with the interior lanes painted in it would require far less boards for the lane separation. Everything can be stored there as well.

If we agree to this proposal we need to move on it fast. They want us to have a race there less than two weeks, the weekend of Sept 20/21. We talked about combining oval and on-road on the same day, this is something that needs to be discussed.

We will need a work day this coming weekend, probably Sat and Sun. Also will need the trailer moved from Marietta to there. It'll require a truck capable of pulling as well as stopping it.

Whatever we discuss here needs to done wisely. The owners can monitor this. While we need to discuss the positive we also need to discuss the negative. Let's keep it clean and intelligent.

ROAR membership will be required, no exceptions!

Another good thing is the potential for a future permanent track in this facility.

One more thing: The discussion of the on-road racing needs to be limited to GO-RC members and those wishing to race on-road or oval at this facility. If you have no intention of racing with us at this or any other location please keep your comments to yourself!

Sounds like that might be a good idea to follow up on. Especially if there is any chance of eventually having a permanent track. I've never been up to Lanier Speedway. How is it as far as the public access on race days? I mean will spectators know we're there or is it hidden from view? Any facilities?

This is the area in blue that we can start in, it's approx 150'x 60'....It has a slight grade down to the far left corner that may make for a off camber sweeper or turn. The area in red would be good for the driver's stand I believe. Given this maybe we get some designs in mind. Pits space can be under the shed at the bottom of the picture or canopies in the area between the scoring building and oval.

There's "port a potties" all over the place.

Just found out today the first race is scheduled for the first weekend of Oct.

I think we can get all the classes with the right designed track. We may have less than the 15' wide lanes we have at the Bowl. One thing to remember is with lanes painted in means the boards aren't at the very edge of the lane.

I'll try to get something down on paper and post it. Meanwhile given the dimensions of approx 160'x60' and where I indicated where the drivers stand/pit lane could be you can come up layouts from that.

I'd like to go there Fri (the day they race) and get some photos to post.

Steve...I got the sense of envy in your post!
