Default Fun Fun Fun!

Just wanted to say that this race was great! With the exception of the bees (thousands flying around), absolutely no complaints. And let's credit the guys running the show in Ft. Myers - they kicked a$$!

They kept everything moving quickly and got all races finished before the sun went down. A class act for sure!

It looked to me like everyone had a lot of fun -- I know I did!

Florida On-Road Gas State Series
Race #2
November 8-9, 2003
Fort Myers, Florida

Saturday

The weather cooperated for a change, giving us mid 80’s with partly cloudy skies. With the recently stirred up excitement in the state series, attendance and competition has never been so great. 93 entrants total showed up to race.

While race director Jim Rice sorted out the entries, practice was under way all morning. The first round of qualifying started around 1 PM with eleven heats total, 5 for Sedan, 3 for 1/10th scale, and 3 for 1/8th scale. For the first time, we had two 1/10th scale entries that ran the new 200mm outlaw class with the 1/10th scale cars. Art Carbonell from Serpent USA came out with his Serpent 705 and Randy Rhodes ran a tricked out Mugen MTX-3. Paul Wynn from Schumacher was in attendance to run his R12 sedan. Paul has been “the” guy to beat lately in .12 sedan. Scotty Gray from Serpent came with his 950 to see about dominating 1/8th scale.

Both rounds of qualifying went really smooth with no real issues with tech inspection. After two rounds of qualifying Paul Wynn and Ryan Rhodes (son of Randy Rhodes). Art Carbonell held off 2003 Winternats champion Juan Prohias for the provisional TQ spot in 1/10th Outlaw. Scotty Gray was on top of the speed charts for 1/8th scale.

Sunday

With a few new racers showing up today it was decided to waste no time and get moving with daylight savings time working against us.

Qualifying

Paul Wynn held onto his TQ position as nobody was able to match his 21 lap run with the next 9 qualifiers turning 20 laps separated by milliseconds! Competition has never been this close!

Art Carbonell held onto his TQ with 22 laps with Juan Prohias nipping at his heels just 6 seconds behind him! How do you feel now about 200mm outlaw running with the standard 1/10th outlaw cars now? I believe they are definitely up to the task!

Scotty Gray held onto his TQ with 23 laps. But Danny Horta of Miami was only 7 tenths of a second behind him! Joaquin DeSoto also ran 23 laps, but 6.8 seconds off TQ. The next 6 racers had 22 laps respectively. 2002-2003 1/10th outlaw champion Lazaro Alonso switched to 1/8th scale this season and had problems qualifying, putting him back in the c main.

Mains

Sedan

The E main was under way with Gino Kock taking the field with 47 laps. Youngster William Berry missed the start of the race, but finished 8th. He ran a field full of adults to cut his teeth in the state series. Look out for him in the future.

The D main was quite a brawl to say the least. George Velazco from Maxy’s Fuels took the lead around 7 minutes into the race from Mark Turkel and never looked back.

The C main was taken by Chris Foster, who ran some nice consistent laps and only lost the lead a few times during the race, but the only one lap matters when holding the lead, the last lap of the race and Chris was there.

The B main had an interesting start and first few laps. All of the cars stayed together in a fairly tight pack for about ten laps, sending Jarrod Pilone and Maxy Velazco packing with broken cars. Francis Lee took the lead after 8 laps and never looked back with the A main in his sights.

The A main was utterly dominated by Paul Wynn, who ran laps mostly in the 14’s during the 25 minute main. The real battle was 2nd and 3rd with Ryan Rhodes and Jason Dembkoski ending up with 97 and 96 laps respectively.

1/10th Outlaw

The C main only had 5 cars run total, with only 3 running at the end. Race Director Jim Rice dominated this field, turning 55 laps and bumping up to the B main.

The B main was a good show. #1 starter Carlos Feliciano fell back to 5th before making his first lap, but worked his way back up to 1st after 5 minutes and never lost the lead again, turning 59 laps. Veteran Racers Richard Fine and Jim Rice followed Carlos with 58 and 57 laps.

The A main should have been rename the Art Carbonell show, because that’s all anyone was watching. Art navigated that track full of larger and heavier cars like a champ! He absolutely dominated the field, never getting challenged for the lead with his 106 lap run. Ray Schneider and Frank Vega fought for the entire race, swapping 2nd and 3rd places 6 times! Ray finished 7 seconds ahead of Frank with 105 laps. Bump-up Carlos Feliciano had a crash about ¾ through the race and busted a front knuckle on his serpent.

1/8th Open

The C main had plenty of excitement, even though there were only 5 cars racing. Powerhouse Lazaro Alonso muscled his serpent to first place about 1 minute into the race and never lost it, turning 60 laps in 15:16.47. 1/8th scale newbie Ross Reardon rounded out the field, wowing anyone watching as he came out of the chicane at speed, hit the wall, and sent his MRX-3 flying high into the air. The damage was minimal, with a flattened pipe being the victim of the incident. Lazaro had his sights set on the higher mains and didn’t skip a beat!

The B main was a great show. Lazaro Alonso took the lead from Fort Myers Veteran Chuck Moon about ten minutes into the race. Lazaro finished first with 64 laps and Chuck, who recently came out of retirement to race again, finished 2nd with 63 laps.

The A main was looking to be a good show with all of these professionals at hand. Scotty Gray definitely had his hands full with Danny Horta and Joaquin Desoto contending for the win as well. Scotty overcame the odds, never lost the lead, and finished first with 114 laps. The real story here is Lazaro Alonso. He had a bunch of bad qualifying runs and fought his way through main after main to get into the show. Hats off to Lazaro for being a true racer and enduring 55 minutes of race time in one afternoon!

Summary

With the large turnout and intense competition, the state series has become highly competitive and a lot of fun. People have really stepped up their performances and it seems as though people are getting along better than ever.

See you at our new track in Naples December 13th and 14th!
