If I could start over agian I would make sure to buy all the good stuff at first, so you only spend the money once!

Good Charger (100+)
Good Discharger (Not a Dead Short, something like a Novak Smart-Tray) (80)
Good Power Supply
Battery Cooling Fan (not needed, but are nice)
Setup Station w/ Droop and Ride Height gauges
Good Cells (At least 2+ Packs)
Set of good Tools
Good box/tackle boxes to store it all in

Then worry about the car, look for a used one.

I'll tell you what I have now

RDX US Spec-450
M11-300
Spektrum-150
Novak GTX-150
Hitec 925 MG Servo-80
Integy discharger-80?? (have to check on that)
Corally Battery and Motor Case-60
1-5 motors-40 (one) 200 (five)
five 3800 batteries at most 100 (500)

add all that up thats about 1970. however thats with five batteries and motors, for a start you wont need that...but all that stuff i listed is top of the line equipment

hope that helped

Good setup would be:

Xray T2, MSX, Cyclone (not in order) = $400
3PK or Helios = $280
Novak GTX = $150.00
Futaba S9451 Servo =$80.00
Spektrum for radio =$150.00
Duratrax Ice Charger = $120.00
Generic Power Supply = $50.00
Teamwave Tray Discharger = $100.00
Hudy All in one = $280.00
Team Cobra lathe = $150.00

You have $240.00 left to spend on tools, motors, batteries & tires. Also if you buy in 1 place you can get big discounts.

Car

T2 or RDX 400-450.00
*Ko Helios or M11 300.00
Duratrax Ice charger 120.00
*High speed servo 100.00
Competition electronic's or Radio shack power supply 100.00
*Speed control (Novak, Tekin, KO) 140-180.00
Batteries 45-70.00 each x 6 (You dont need the best if you are starting off)
*Associated, Integy or Hudy tools 50-150.00
Much More Discharger 200.00 or Novak Smart tray 80.00(this will keep your batteries like new)

This equals 1870.00 using the highest prices listed. The rest I would use to buy parts for the car. The items with an * beside them are items you do NOT want to buy cheap now and upgrade later. Dont bother with a spectrum unit right now. Its a luxury that still has its problems and with everyone else using it it's very easy to get your channel when you need it.

it gets more EXPENSIVE if stuff has to match.. color wise.. Tamiya Blue, HPI Purple, Associated Blue, Yokomo Blue... XRay chrome.. etc.

look up a Pyramid 20A power supply. it sells online for $55.

A starting point is to go to your local track and hobby store and see what all the fast guys are using and what they have on the wall for parts.

no fun to have a car you have to order parts for and wait a week for it

what everone has listed so far are good

I like these type of posts because after spending so much on this hobby I feel I can offer something from learned mistakes...

XRay T2 - $400
LRP Quantum 2 ESC - $150
M11 Radio - $250
Spektrum for M11 & Receiver - $150
Airtronics 94360Z Servo - $110
ICE Charger with Temp Gauge - $130
Pyramid PSV 200 Power Supply - $60
Hakko 936 Soldering Iron - $80
Much More CTX D Discharger - $200
Team Associated Nut Drivers - $45
Team Associated Hex Drivers - $45
3 Packs 1.20+ IB3800's Pre-Built Fusion Batteries - $200
2 Stock Motors (Monster & C027) - $80
Team Magic Formula 8 Hauler - $200
12v Power Distribution Box - $35
Tires - $40
Integy Set Up Station 2 - $100

I went a little over your $2000 budget but you would be VERY happy with this set up. There are still a few things missing with you will eventually need with a tire truer and comm lathe the 2 biggest items but most hobby shops offer those type of services. I also overlooked small items like CA glue, pinions, solder, etc. Good pinions will run around $5 each and the rest of the misc parts I mentioned can be had for about $20 total. Good luck!
