Default ESC choice

hey all,
just for starters, I am no where near as serious as some of you, and I've been in and out of the hobby since the 1980's so please go easy on me lol
anyway, we are running a handful of touring cars on a very nicely paved parking lot, just some cones and a couple of 150' straights we are running a couple of VXL's a couple of 3900Kv cheap motors, I HATE the brakes on this esc and I'm looking to replace it.
looking for suggestions. im not looking to race on a track anytime soon, just hanging out with friends and looking for an edge.
thanks in advance.

If you run on 2S lipo packs, you might want to have a look at the Hobbywing XR10 Justock speed control. Bullet-proof and not too expansive. A more economical option is the SkyRC TS50 or the G-Force TS50 which are the same ESC.

Agree to the gentleman above, Hobbywing's range of ESC are bulletproof and you just can't go wrong with them.

Trackstar esc v2 is based on Skyrc Toro 120a and gforce 120A ESC's. Skyrc&gforce are very good esc's but i would recommend Hobbywing, they are around the same prices.

I've run them all and for the $$ the Skyrc TS120a with the aluminum case is really hard to beat.

You can get it on ebay for about $70 and in my opinion it's better than the HobbyKing Trakstar version because of the all aluminum case. You'll need the $20 programmer to make the most of it.

The rf170 SMC is probably the best for money just over $100 I have been running the rf120 but they have been replaced with the 170 which is suppose to be better and they work great and top notch customer service

I have used the Hobby wing Justock esc with a 3 cell lipo and toast it. It was definitely a great one with a 2 cell, so I then tried the trackstar esc and still using it to date in my VTA car and I am using the Toro Ts50 in my 17.5 car to date and love them both.

Trackstar 60a Sportsman. At around $30 you can't beat it. But you need the tuning box which is hard to get.

more good information! thanks!
I'm leaning towards the SMC RF-170. I am probably going to grab one of the 7200mAh 90c 2s batteries also.
forgive me if this sounds stupid.
is this too much ESC and battery for a VXL motor? I mean, can you over ESC a motor?
I am still figuring out brushless motors/ESC'S

You can't over ESC And if you ESC supports more power than you will use, you might eventually use it.

They have a combo deal on the RF170 that includes the Totemic 9.5 motor and both the USB and P. box.
Mine just arrived by Fedex an hour ago. It sounds like you want a mod motor for outdoors, so that is a good deal. I really didn't need a 9.5 and would rather have a 17.5 or 13.5 for one of my indoor setups, but the deal was on mod motors and they looked too good to pass up.
