GFX with clear back plate
I cut a piece of plexiglass to replace the black panel on the back on my gfx. Does it need holes for the fan to move air or are the opening on the side of the case good enough?
Thanks |

Nice idea...... I would like to try 2 fans for better cooling. Do you have some photo ?

I'll post some pics. I am going to just drill a 3" hole for now. I have some cool fans grills coming.

Two fans fit well with a little modification to the case. There is some ribbing that needs to be dremeled out of the way for two fans of the same size as the original fan to fit. The LHS will have some small red JST male/female connectors that you can solder inline and to the PC board to make removal and repair ALOT easier for future projects/repair. Since the fan wire goes through the heat sink... it can be a pain to do what you want when disassembling the entire GFX. The connectors remove the weight of the fan(s) from the wire and off of the PC connections. The backplate needs holes for each fan installed... if it doesnt then it will feed little air to the heatsink and overheat the unit. The led fans are cool...but honestly dont usually move as much air as a standard fan of the same size. If you want color just add some in case lighting... there is plenty of room to do what you want in there.

i made a power supply box outta an old t30 case. put one fan in the back, and sho-good'd two on the sides (near the slots) and fit a 15 amp astroflight inside..... the thing stays REALLY cool with 3 fans.. ;-)
i do agree.. LED fans are not as strong. |
Does the fan on the back of the gfx push air out or pull air in?
|
Mine pulls air in and blows across the heatsink.

I put the clear back on and here is a pic. I have not cut the holes yet. Here is a pic with the stock plate on as well. I plan on using the modware fan grill below. It should be here Tuesday.

Does the factory fan blow in or blow out ?
|
It appears to blow in. I was surprised that it was not blowing out.
|
that probably explains why the back plate is always covered with dust. if it blew out then the dust would be inside the case which would not be a good thing.
say you replace the fan, is it as simple as cutting the red and black wire from the old fan, and just soldering the wires back from the new fan? |
