Default Associated brushless apex help

I can't keep my car from spinning out on acceleration. Horrible steering at speed.. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm running the stock green shocks, 50w Shock oil all around. Tried messing with the throttle trim on the controller... All it did was make it a slug... I guess where do I start? I'm newly back into the hobby and thourouly confused on how to remedy this.. Thanks to all your help & replys in advance.

are you running at a track or on the street? unprepared street runs cars usually spin out cause of the dust / debris /rocks.

do all the wheels spin freely? is any drive shaft broken or disconnected?

if it is the 4wd version, all four wheels should move at the same time, if one spins freely when the other 3 dont, there's something wrong.

I know what you're talking about. I have an Apex that I spent a lot of time working on and got it to the point where it was manageable. I can give you my setup if you want to use it for a start, but you'll have to wait until later tonight when I get home.

Right off the bat I would suggest that 50W shockoil is too high... I am pretty sure I was running between 25W and 32W depending on the situation. Also, lay the rear shocks down more if you can (innermost on top, outermost on bottom).

And, dumb question, but you're using traction compound, right? Never could get anything out of that car without traction compound.

But you do need to tell us if you're running on carpet or asphalt.

Hope this helps.

I'm running on asphalt course. My diffs seem fine.. it is a all wheel shaft car. I'm not running any kind of compound. I would love to see your tips on keeping this thing on the course better. My tc-3 has the same tires and hooks up way better... Thought this car would be a upgrade.. The tc-3 I bought used already built up.

Thanks for the replies guys. This is frustrating the hell out of me..

I use Simple Green to clean tires and found that on a properly prepared asphalt track that this was fine. Traction compound did nothing. Asphalt tracks often have less grip than carpet and it helps to use a softer suspension. Try 40/35 weight oil front and rear and maybe softer springs as well. Check the TC3 asphalt setups as a guide. Have you checked the camber on all four corners? Try -2 on all 4 tires and see if that helps. You can also change the angle of the rear shocks to give more grip. Move the top of the rear shocks in one hole at a time and see what that does.

That's the beauty of this car... I'm having trouble finding turnbuckels for suspension... It came with fixed arms.. All the ones I've seen are about a 1/8" to long. I did put 35w oil in the shocks and moved the rear mount as mentioned above. About to hit up the track.. Hopefully it made a difference.

Ok, so here is the last asphalt setup I used, FWIW.

Bear in mind that I was running this as a VTA car. TC tires should grip better, but I would start close to this and go from there.

Do the APEX cars still come with two wings? Mine did, and the steeper angle wing made a huge difference when I first bashed with the car out of the box (before I turned it into a VTA).

If you don't have traction compound, then I agree with SteveM -- use Simple Green every run and keep those tires as clean as possible.

And no, that's not a typo below... I actually did have the fronts set for toe IN. Contrary to every other setup in the world. Prior to this setup I had them at 0°.

Parameter : Value
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Track: Asphalt with soda treatment

Front Wheels: 26mm HPI VTA 5-spoke black
Front Track Width: 1 blue spacer (1mm)
Front Tires : HPI 4793 (standard VTA)
Traction Compund (coverage): paragon ground effects (50%)
Front Shock Oil: 25
Front Shock Rebound: 0% (caps drilled)
Front Springs (lbs/inch): Silver (14.5)
Front Shock Tower position: innermost position
Front Shock A-arm position: outermost
Front Ride Height: 6.5
Front Droop Height (Front Droop): 10.0 (3.5)
Front Toe: 1° toe IN
Front Camber: -1.0° to -2.0° see note1
Front Camber Link Ball Studs - inner: tall, 1mm blue spacer
Front Camber Link Ball Studs - outer: tall, no spacer
Front Camber Link position - inner: innermost position
Front Camber Link position - outer: fixed, non-adjustable.
Front Caster: fixed, believed to be 6°
Front Differential Oil: 2000 cst

Rear Wheels: 31mm HPI VTA 5-spoke black
Rear Track Width: normal
Rear Tires: HPI 4797
Traction Compound (coverage): SXT3.0 (100%)
Rear Shock Oil: 30
Rear Shock Rebound: 25%
Rear Springs (lbs/inch): Green (12.0)
Rear Shock Tower position: innermost
Rear Shock A-arm position: outermost
Rear Ride Height: 6.0
Rear Droop Height (Rear Droop): 10.0 (4.0)
Rear Toe In: 1.5° to 2.0° depending on tire rotation
Rear Camber: -1.0°
Rear Camber Link Ball Studs - inner: short, no spacer
Rear Camber Link Ball Studs - outer: short, no spacer
Rear Camber Link position - inner: 2nd from outermost
Rear Camber Link position - outer: outer position

Spur/Pinion Pitch: 64
Spur Gear Teeth : 72
Pinion Gear Teeth: 50
Final Drive Ratio: 3.766
Rear Differential Oil: 1000 cst

note1: -1.0° for new tires, increasing to -2.0° as tires wear

Good luck.

The Factory Team turnbuckles used on the TC6 should fit... pretty sure that's what I used. Even though they are for the TC6, I believe you can find the part numbers for them on the Team Associated "parts" webpage for the Apex as well. Highly recommended.
