I agree with this. Right or wrong the 6.5 blinky idea has at least gotten a lot more 12th drivers to engage in modified. How many are signed up for mod at the Halloween race now? Its a lot more than there has been in the last few years. Doesn't mean it has to stay 6.5 blinky (sport mod) nationally but if it increases participation for the next couple years and then slides back to full open mod with 3 times the participation is that a bad thing? Doesn't have to be forever, just for as long as necessary would be the way to look at it maybe?

Here's a thought,

Since we are wanting to try things to grow the hobby, allow either 1s 6.5t Blinky OR 2s 13.5t Blinky in this new mod class.

The performance should be similar between the two, and a 13.5t racer could join in by buying one of the LCG/Thin Shorty packs. With several of these batteries being less expensive than a motor, it may be all that is needed to entice a few extra guys to give it a shot.

Just a data point for the discussion.

Quote:
Following the recent change to the BRCA National classes, the Shootout Series offers the same classes for LMP12 cars with 13.5 blinky as the Stock class and 6.5 blinky as the revised Modified category. The switch to 6.5 blinky in place of Open Modified appears to have bolstered entries for all events, with nearly 3-times more competitors signing up to race this class than when it was run as open motor and speedo previously.

This is why an Open motor will probably be the best option, but we have to get there first.

Um, Trinity part number REV1816, 24K 6.5 modified motor. Short stack... I've got the 3.5 that I haven't used yet...

Ignore the date, it's 6.5 blinky from Sunday.

Close your eyes and just listen to the entire race... yep, still more power than many can handle. Just another "stock" class my rear

Just looking at the Nationals, there are roughly twice as many mod 6.5 entries so far than 13.5 Sports!

We ran 6.5 blink at 360v2 Vegas warmup race this weekend. Two heats as well as some of the best qualifiers and interest of the weekend

FYI cars dumped racing was really good and competitive
Great to see something positive for this class futurehttps://youtu.be/cukF8HV3Hqc

I went to 360 this weekend as a spectator. To echo Phil's point, it was great to see an increase in participation for 1/12th scale mod.

Some interesting data for comparison from MHIC (open mod) to 360v2 (6.5t blinky). There are three common data points for those races: myself (Chris H), Jari, and Keven.

For MHIC:

Jari: 8.336
Chris H: 8.295
Keven: 8.198

In turn, Jari was 1.683% off of Keven on fast lap. I was 1.183% off of Keven on fast lap.

For the overall run at MHIC, I finished (effectively) 19.7 seconds behind Keven.

For 360v2

Jari: 12.54
Chris: 12.304
Keven 11.999

Jari was 4.5% off of Keven, while I was 2.54% off of Keven. The layout was a lot more technical at 360v2, so this might account for the increase in gap on fast lap from Keven. Although I should note that in practice after the race, I did get my fast lap down to just over 1% off of Keven - so actually an improvement from MHIC.

For overall run at 360v2, I finished 5.1 seconds behind Keven. Keven's run wasn't entirely clean, though, so I would imagine the gap would be larger without those early incidents. I highly doubt he would have put an extra 14 seconds into me, though - which would match the MHIC gap.

So, it looks like our first 6.5t blinky race produced some interesting results where fast lap gaps were actually larger (potentially due to layout and reduced track time compared to MHIC) but the mains were actually closer.

But to Josh's earlier comments, a capacity limit would do the same thing in full open mod, with out turning it into a blinky, spec class.

The only argument people had to that idea was the catastrophe of LiPo's dumping..... but it's happening already with 6.5 and just wait till guys really start to figure them out and sucking the juice out of them packs.

I imagine the dumping is due to the loss of efficiency with blinky.

Perhaps a move to blinky esc and open motor might produce the results people are looking for? Or will it be the same as soon as motors get "figured out" with blinky esc?
