Just purchased Xray T4 2016 - Return it for 2017?
After a 15 year hiatus from RC racing, I've decided to get back in. Unaware that a 2017 model was coming out so soon, I ordered a Xray T4 2016 on Saturday. I haven't even received it yet.
Question is: Should I just keep the 2016 or return it unopened and wait for the 2017? I'm not overly worried about performance since I'll just be club racing and it'll take me some time to get back into the groove and build up my driving skills. How is Xray with supporting older models with parts? Am I going to be screwed finding 2016 parts a year from now?

Easy answer is no you won't have parts issues

The new car will continue as a T4 and the majority of parts will be the same from 2016 to 2017. I wouldn't put a second thought into waiting due to parts concerns. You have the car now, just put it together and go get some laps done. Laps will be way more important that the minor updates the car will receive anyway.

If you're club racing - I wouldn't even give it a second thought. We have about 12-13 guys that run at our local track, and I think 5 have the Xray 2016 car. This past Wednesday I lapped the guy that normally beats me, twice, with an Associated 5.1. Granted, he had trouble with back-markers a couple of times. and overall I had a fairly clean race.
It's all about driving and having some fun. You will be competitive with that car, trust me. Get the car put together, look for tips on the build in the Xray 1/12 thread, and then pound out the laps. It'll be fun!!

It is probably just as capable as the '17 minus new features. Parts with xrays have always been very compatible.
The thing I would consider is resale value. Assuming both kits are the same price, the '17 will have newer parts, it will have higher resale just because it is a "year" newer.
Is there a return or restocking fee you need to consider?
If you plan to keep it for a while and are itching to turn laps, then you already know your answer

Thanks, guys! You definitely answered my questions! I'll stick with the 2016. Hope to hit the track for the first time in nearly 15 years on Sept 3.
The last time I raced was with a RC10TC3 at the Indoor Nationals in Independence, OH Thanksgiving 2001. That was my senior year of high school. I sold all my stuff before leaving for college. I continued working part time at a hobby shop until 2007. Man, have things changed!

Both Yokomo and Xray typically release new kit's with a date suffix. TRF do the "X" and Schumacher do "Evo".
It could be argued there's a demand for a new kit each year if you race every second weekend and compete in classes like modified where wear and tear play a big part in the up keep.
Ultimately though it keeps consumers coming back to buy new bits, the same way Samsung and Apple keep you coming back to buy new phones each year. Just that little bit more.
I do think chasing the latest and greatest affects the enjoyment we have of cutting laps with our mates. Now I really need to take my own advice!

With the changes on the new kit, being marginal, id keep the 16. Its a damn good car, and likely will surpass your "cobweb ability" for atleast a few packs

In all honesty, I was never that great at carpet touring car. Back then it was stock motors and 3000mAh MiMh batteries. Where I shined was in 2WD 1/10th nitro truck with my RC10GT. I also raced 1/8 nitro buggy for two summers.

The other thing i can say, is there are PLENTY of setups out there that work for all sorts of traction, carpets, compounds, etc. so, you will have plenty of things to try, and whats being changed on the new car, you can always convert this '16 to '17 spec if you really felt it necessary.

They change one or two parts and that justifies a new kit a year. The last change of any real substance on the T4 was the suspension holders from 13' to 14' from there what has it been, 14-15 they added bearing swaybars and ARS, 15-16 they changed the motor mount slightly.

16 got ecs shafts which is a big plus in kit stock form. The motor mount is kinda meh. Most people use just one screw. I use all screws with alu chassis but from what ive seen on setup sheets not common. Maybe they will make a cf or alu version.
Id just build the 16 and enjoy it. Half the game is making you feel the need to buy a car every year. You would prob be just as well off with a 14/15. Even the 13 was easy to drive and consistant.
