You asked for "must have" items. Your list is more "nice to have", maybe with the exception of the adjustable upper arms. I don't have ball diff, one way or sway bar and I'm still able to race (and occasionally win) against more expensive cars (540 class). Make sure that the car is as much free rolling as possible.

Oil shock, good tires, and a fast motor. Thats the "must have" to win races anyways....eveything else is how will you drive!

Why does my son's TT-01 go faster in reverse? His car has the Tamiya ESC. I did the setup following the instruction manual. My TT-01 goes faster forward. Hmm...

I cant remeber if you can do this with the stock ESC, but turn off the reverse if you can and it will go faster.

I think I figured it out.... I will have to go home and test it but I have an idea in my head now.

I must have put the diffs the wrong way. I will go switch both diffs around.

It's probably not the diffs- I don't think you can install them backwards due to the internal shape of the diff housings. However, you may have plugged in the motor backwards (yellow on motor and orange on ESC= positive, green on motor and blue on ESC= negative) or you may have to reverse the throttle on your radio.

I turned the diffs around and it is faster forward now. And it is also quieter. When the teeth get worn it would worth a try to switch the front and back gears...so that they can be meshed on the other side of the teeth.
