I prefer a smooth diff
#1577
ball diff should be smooth but not loose, hold down 2 rear tires firmly then try rotating the spur gear with right thumb, it should not spin easily.

Success! My DIY Tamiya F103GT mini.

Compared to the Field One kit, this has a 225mm wheelbase. Although, I'm now starting to work on my own 210mm wheelbase chassis.

Will post a build-blog sometime soon, probably after testing it first on track. Basically, here are the things that I had to make or machine myself:
1. 4mm FRP main chassis
2. 2mm FRP upper chassis
3. Shortened rear drive shaft
4. Narrowed diff housing
And the stuff you need to buy:
1. F104 front arms
2. 5mm ball studs
3. 30mm turnbuckles
4. F104PRO diff joint
It looks simple on paper, but the R&D took me around 4 months. I could have just bought the conversion kit from Field One, but making your own from scratch makes it a lot more fun.

Finished 2nd overall during our F1 race last Saturday. The 10 car grid was composed of F103's and F104's. Mine was the only F103GT in the field.
The rules are simple, fixed max FDR and everyone had to run Silver Can motors.
We run 15 minute mains where I finished 2nd in two races and 1st in one. The only guy who was able to beat me was running an F103LM with F104 rear tires.
Here's the full race report of our mini F1 grand prix:
http://www.rccartips.com/f1-rc-cars-...alaysia-gp.htm
I ran 45 shore front foams and 37 shore rears from Ellegi. Handling was amazing and hardly spun out. My only problem is that after 5 minutes of racing, the power suddenly dropped. My battery is a 3600mah 25c Lipo from Orion.
I'm thinking if it could be my packs showing some age, or if I had somehow overheated my motor. I can't tell for now if it's the motor because I never bothered touching it right after the race. (63T spur / 16T pinion)

Holy Thread Resurrection Batman!!!
Hey all, spares for this car are pretty rare now.....and I am looking for this..
3Racing (#F103GT-32/LB) Alum +2mm Offset Rear Wheel Adaptor (LB)
They used to be stocked at rcmart and the normal 3R stockists, but nobody has them, and even 3R says they are OOS
Tried ebay too.. no luck, looks like one of you fine folk may be able to 'conjure' one up
:-)
Regards

Guys, I need your help on this one. I've been running nitro foams on my F103GT and F103GT Mini for quite some time now. I thought I had the shore rating all figured out but my track test last night jumbled everything I knew about tires.
Here's my findings with tire shore mixes:
45 front | 42 rear: Really bad understeer
42 front | 42 rear: Mild understeer and very drivable
40 front | 40 rear: Really aggressive turn in but can spin out if pushed too hard
40 front | 38 rear: Undriveable, spins on all corners
The sweet spot was around 40 to 42 shore. Air temp was around 30 deg C last night and was kinda humid. I really thought that the softer the tire, the better the grip, but this wasn't so. Any inputs?

I also ran two f103gt's with nitro foams and one with a 6t brushed motor, and the second one with a Novak 3.5R... They were both faster than 8th scales down the straight, and I could only run 40shore fronts, and a combo in the rear of 40shore on the outside left, and 38shore on the inside right... The rear was planted with that combo and trinity red dot tire sauce. I had to switch to a 12ball ball diff, using kimbrough 48p gears, reamed to fit tamiya Bearings.... I have since learned that my cars can go even faster when I switched from maxamps 20C packs to thunderpower 65C packs.... I have to choose the tracks I run on carefully, so I don't crash.... Blue diamond seems interesting, but that will be for summertime......

That being said I would love to be proven wrong by a video of yours.

Time to fill this thread with life again
I pulled the trigger on this beauty:
I searched the web for Tamiya Option parts and found some, but a lot of them are out of production since a long time.
Especially the carbon topdeck is not to be found anywhere in Europe or HK
This thing will become a mix between shelfqueen and just for fun / enjoying the hobby drive.
The build will start tomorrow
