Best car for beginner?
Hey guys, looking to start getting into rc cars. Not going to be racing competitively aside from just friends. Looking for the best setup for me and my budget is $300 but I can stretch it a little if possible. After lurking the forum people have recommended to start of with TA05, however, I haven't been able to find it in stock anywhere.
Would like your opinions on the best route for me.

If Tamiya, the TT02 is easy to build and drive.

nice, so from what ive read so far the TT-02R would be the most versatile should i want to drift, rally or race. Any specific parts I can upgrade right away but not blow money lol

I would just drive it stock and then bump up the motor as you get better at driving.

in terms of tools, what all do I need to put this beast together? any tool kits avialable?

Tools? For the most part on the TT02, you need a philips screw driver.
Use included tools with the kit for the mean time.
Try looking in the for sale threads for a good deal on tools.
If you want a new set, Try http://www.tqrcracing.com/, http://www.amain.com/rc-cars or ebay
Enjoy! RC is fun.

A nice, clean, 2nd hand TRF. Best bargain out there since it'll be the same price (or cheaper) than a brand-new TT/TB/TA and you also won't end up spending a grip of money on hop-up parts in the future.
Eg: I got a mint, ran twice, TRF with a bunch of spares for $180 a month or so ago. I too am brand new to RC (haven't had an RC car since the late 80s). Sure beats a brand-new, but base, TT, TB or TA

http://www.nitrorcx.com/88c211-x10tc...d-rtr-24g.html this is at the higher end of your budget but is brushless and comes with everything you need to run.

I recommend the Veterra V100 1/10 RC RTR cars. You get everything you need out of the box and the esc is lipo battery compatible. The price has recently dropped on these cars from $299.99 to $249.99. You can also save even more if you order from Amain. They give you discount coupons if you sign up to their e-mail newsletter. Probably the first upgrade to get would be a lipo battery which offers more speed and longer run time. The Tamiya TT-02 is a really good choice as well just feel you get a little more for your money with the Veterra set up.
Another excellent option would be the Associated APEX RTR w/ LiPo battery for $299.99. This car features a brushless motor, LiPo battery and everything else you need out of the box. If you want to spend more of the upper end of your budget, than I would probably go with the Apex over the Veterra. Since you will get a little better performance from the get go.
In general, I would probably go with a shaft drive car over a belt drive car for parking lot bashing. The Tamiya TT-02, Veterra V100 and the Associated Apex are all shaft drive cars.
Best regards,
Brian

Ok when buying a used chassis just make sure there are parts available in the market or else you'll end up with a collector's item when you break something.
I still maintain and agree with my friend sakadachi's advise. Buy the TT02. It's versatile and has a lot of good reviews.

Many TT02 owners will help you when you have questions I'm sure.
You could also try looking into the HPI RS4 Sport 3

There's a guy selling his.

Vaterra looks good as well but I never had the chance to own one.
Again, good luck and enjoy!

For an RTR I'd suggest the Apex touring over the RS4 Sport3 Flux. Just a better diving vehicle. The RS4 is plagued with a front dog bone issue. Plus a heavy body and oversized tires.
For kit I'd say TC4. Been around long time.
Only experience with Tamiya was a tt-01. Bought mostly for body.
