I just placed a order for a 13.5 and 17.5 . Do I gear this motor like a trinity short stack ? I will be running at Tamiya race track .

Default 13.5 & 17.5 boosted

Hi guys. We still run boosted classes in South Africa. We tested the motor and found that we need to take the can timing all the way down to 20deg to make it work in the boosted classes. Has anyone tried these motors in boosted?. Any idea what gearing will suit these motors. ? Any info will help.
Thanks

For boosted typically I have found 10-15 deg can timing to work best with a 12.3mm broad powerband rotor.

13.5T boosted gearing anywhere from 6.2-7.5:1 depending on the track and rotor.

Thanks for the info. We received the motors with the 12.5 rotors. Any idea for gearing? We will try the can between 10 and 15. Our initial test we got it working better when we took the can from 40 down to 20. So the can on 10- 15 makes sense. We will try it again . We are running orca esc's.

At my home track switching from 12.3mm broad power band to 12.5mm HT rotor I dropped the FDR by 0.4 and reduced the can timing from 15 to 10 and reduced turbo timing from 17 to 12 deg.

I would try and get a 12.3mm rotor if you can.

I ran the M-Code 21.5 today in USGT and was very impressed. At Ho-B Max in Durham, NC we run qualifiers with straight starts... so every qual has all racers running against the same clock. I was unfortunate and started last for the first qual. When the tone went off, it was like a rocket... I passed two cars on the straight right off the bat and quickly got up front. Set TQ the first round... made some mistakes in the 2nd round and TQ was no more. I did win the 3rd round but missed out on TQ. Ended up winning the main after an amazing back and forth showdown... so much fun! I left the timing as it was when I got it... I figured Paul's settings had to be close and they were. Very impressed and I wish I could tell you what temp but whenever I pulled off... it couldn't have been more than 110*..... wasn't even warm to the touch!!! As others have said, great powerband on this motor!! Can't wait to race again!!! Thanks Motiv and Paul!!

Default Tamiya Nats

This past weekend I raced the Tamiya Nats and I ran a motiv 13.5 motor in the GT1 class . The motor ran strong all weekend and never faded during the 8min race ! I geared the motor at 4.17 at 43degre timing and the motor was coming off at 162 with a WTF fan on it . I did try 40degre timing and after 8min the motor came off at 123 . I finished 3rd in GT1 ! By just looking at the motiv motor you can tell Pauly builds only quality motors and I even heard that other motor builders said that Paul put quality parts in his motor ! Great job Paul ! Can't wait to try your batteries !

I ran my 13.5 in 1S with the 7800 Defy battery in my GT 12. It is by far one of the smoothest accelerating motors I have run. As everyone running in blinky will tell you, don't change the timing and gear to the track. These are awesome pan car motors. Mine came at 45 deg on the can. I set rollout at 70 to test and settled at 73mm. 12.3 rotor has more than enough torque and RPM to balance great acceleration with high top end. Temp was at 140 F without a fan. Great product Paul. What size track? Did you try gearing closer to an 80 mm rollout? If so, what did your results look like?

The car weighs in at 950g per the spec. I'm sure it would roll out higher with less weight in regular 12th scale. The track is huge and I was testing back to back with a D4 shortstack.we are running 18 to 19 second laps. I will put it in the SpeedMerchant and see what she does. I'm sure it will not disappoint.

What does different rotor strengths offer for tuning aids? I assume a higher strength rotor will have more torque, correct?

I'll be using a 13.5 for blinky 1/12 and a 21.5 for F1.

Other words - is it worth buying a high strength rotor?

In contrast to some other manufacturers, the Motiv rotors are all the same diameter and only differ in rotor strength, so the normal discussion about air gap impacting torque and RPM isn't applicable. You are correct that the higher rotor strength should increase torque, though.

Given that there is no difference in diameter and most folks say 'more is better', I think the high strength rotor is a good choice for most applications, but especially with 2s classes. Depending on the layout and all the other variables the difference might not be as noticeable with 1/12, but it is likely still worth trying.

We run 10.5 non-boosted WGT in this series.

I am not seeing the 10.5 on any lists yet, is there an ETA on when/if it will be approved? First race for me in the series is the 17th of this month, really don't want to go and buy another motor...

Paul has been absolutely slammed recently and I am not sure if he has had the time to proceed with the submittal process for the 10.5. In all honesty, I doubt you will see anything by the 17th. I asked him about it recently for the Reedy 1/12 race and the answer was that he just hasn't had the time yet to move forward with this. Sorry I don't have a better answer.
