Pardon me if this is a dumb question, as I've only been driving F1 for less than a year, but couldn't you have achieved the same result by simply turning down the throttle EPA? I usually run mine in the 80-85% range on my F104 v2 w/21.5 on 2S. It makes it much easier to drive for a newbie like myself, IMHO.

Bingo. I normally have his radio turned down to 70-80% EPA, but he just gets run over on the straights. With this setup, the car is more driveable, but he still has the same top speed as everyone else on the track. I've even tried to set the punch level on his ESC to the lowest setting. 13.5/1s is still softer on the bottom end.

Maybe we should allow Gyros and Stability Management, that would make it easier to drive

Few of you are negative sight unseen almost like the transition from 540J motors to brushless 21.5 was going to kill the class a few years ago this class is evolving. To me the 13.5 feels similar to the performance of a 540j motors. I think some time and trial and error we will see if 1s f1 cars will be in the future of f1. In the begginng 21.5 's weren't as powerful as they are now with trial and error the speed of the f1 cars have gone up from where they were even last year the fastest set up will win.
We race toy cars for fun so less parts breakage can't help but draw and keep more racers in the f1 racing.. Even in real f1 racing they tweak the rules the power of the motors the downforce levels etc. Teams test and experiment and innovation is the essence of f1 so for many of you to. Just dismiss these tweaks as sacralidge is narrow minded flat earth thinking to me?

The last season of BRCA Nationals ran the F1 class with 1S and 13.5 blinky. Whilst numbers were low it was an increase over previous years. Most found the cars easier to drive with less rip out of corners. I missed the grunt and weight transfer that I enjoyed so much with 2S and 21.5 at the IIC and Snowbirds. Especially with the larger carpet tracks.
The weight limit was interesting. I have to add a lot of weight to my WTF1 to make the 2S limit, but the much lower 1S limit we ran was one I was 10g over. Most of that was in a heavier 1S speedo I ran.
What this did do was encourage some GT12 and World GT racers to try the F1 class as they could use the same electrics.
My understanding is the next season of BRCA Nationals will give a choice of 1S 13.5 and 2S 21.5 all running together. I have 2S gear all ready to go in my car, so no secret what I'm looking forward to running.

You are correct. The class is evolving. Our cars go faster every year. We watch guys buy into the class, smash the car and never come back. Saying F1 is not a rookie class is missing the big picture. People run F1 because they either like the styling of the cars or they follow F1 1:1 (or both). But, it's a relatively small niche in the hobby at the moment. The thing is if 13.5 1S 950g were just allowed as an option, discussion over. In two months of getting your butt handed to you by a guy running 1S who is marginally slower overall, but his car is easier to drive consistently will cause you to become a believer in the formula. The fast guy will always be the fast guy. Again, I'm ready either way and I do know all the tricks to keep the tires under a 21.5.
I too watch guys break every week and drop out of f1 saying the cars are temperamental to drive and they are making more repairs then driving the car. I would just loveb to see that racer be able to stay on the track long enough to get hooked.
Yes fast guys will drive what is going to win.

I've done what Ed suggests when racing F1 on very slippery surfaces.

Just out of curiosity I did a little test. I normally run some negative expo on my throttle (Futaba radio). I turned it all the up to -100% expo and took the car out to my paved driveway where I do a lot of testing of various things on my cars. The grip there is lower than the carpet tracks I normally race on.
At -100% the car was incredibly gentle/soft off the line and VERY easy to drive. Still had top end, I didn't lower my EPA from my normal amount. In fact, at -100% it was almost "pokey" off the line and I couldn't spin the rear tires.
I have never tried a 1S setup, but I can't imagine somebody would find a 2S setup with -100% expo hard to drive at all. Even a newbie like me.
Just some observations.

This was my point as well. If an option is available, the best option will prevail.
It's a pan car and the trend for pan cars is 1S for a reason. The rules didn't force 1S to take over, the results did!
