Motor cooling fan
Can I connect my motor cooling fan directly to the battery? I was told the esc only puts out 6v but if you connect direct to the battery that you'll get 8.4v and the fan will operate more efficiently. I did this but the fan seems to stall sometimes ?

I connect all of my fans to the battery (soldered to the esc).
Generally, you want the fan to be rated above 5v or 6v and that could be the reason it's stalling.

Maybe your BEC voltage is set too low, and I've seen fans stall when the fan is mounted too close to the motor. Just things to consider...

Try putting your fan 10mm away from the motor and see if it stalls.

I have the tornado plus cooling fan it's rated at 8.4v I believe it's about 15 or even 20mm away from the motor as I use a cooling duct. I have soldered directly onto the battery connectors. The fan is new only about 3 outings old. The first 2 outings I had it connected directly to the esc and it was fine i only moved it this last run. It seems to stall then when I accelerate it comes on and stays on for a while. So sounds like it should just go flat out from the moment I connect the battery. I'll check that bec voltage. Maybe the fan is playing up?

What fan are you using? Try to replace it with the Surpass or Slidelogy fan. Both are rated at 28000rpm at 6v and it's so powerful and very effective. Much stronger than the YR and R1 fans which are rated at 14000rpm. Normal fan rating is between 8000 to 12000rpm.

Then the Surpass fan will be even more powerful. But at 28000rpm, I don't think you'll need to connect the fan directly to avoid stalling. Try it out and you'll see what I'm talking about. The fan is pretty cheap.

Which R1 fan? The low profile or the thicker one?

Wtf fans are known for stalling. I switched to r1 and haven't had one issue. Yeah racing fans are solid as well

I have wild turbo fan in 3 different car that I have ran for the past several years and have not had the problem that you say that you have had and they are connected to my esc.

If you wire the fan direct to the battery - don't forget to turn your esc on before you go to the drivers stand. After years of having the fan noise start when I turned on the car, once I wired it up to the battery, I would forget to turn the car on. When I built my last car, I just moved the fan wiring back to the receiver - I never saw temps that alarmed me unless it was really hot outside.
