If you think $5000 as a bonus for winning the worlds is "high", then fine. Otherwise, they don't make much money, relatively speaking.

I was told at the last round of the ETS last year that Volker got a 20,000 bonus for winning the ETS (can't remember if it was the series ort just one round though)
Also been told Naoto is considered a spoilt brat even by his own team lol

But I doubt there's anything left for him to accomplish as a driver. Most people drive like there personalities. And Naoto gets out of the way for no one. So I think he's ready for a new challenge in life. But your guess is as good as mine.
6 figure days in the US are gone except for maybe a few Off road guys. No one in onroad (in the US) is pulling near that in even with bonus money. Perhaps if you figure in all their travel, hotel, entries, food, etc into it it may get close.

If he joins tamiya, then we would see numerous products and developments within 1/12 and off-road products in the foreseeable future.

Would explain the loss of Lee Martin and a few others from Tamiya.

Heard a while ago money for racing was tight for even Tamiya. So I doubt Tamiya. Unless they let go of Wilk and Groskamp

Groskamp barely raced for Tamiya last year really. Sadly I think he won't be with them much longer.

Some drivers can make close to 6 figures if they are fortunate enough to be with the right company (high base) that has winning equipment (high bonus). These don't always go together.

The ideal situation for pro drivers is to spend their time advancing their education or making themselves valuable in ways other than as a driver.
