Default Thinking of getting old electric car, HPI RS4 Pro 2

Thinking about picking up an HPI RS4 Pro 2 electric car. It's in great condition for being 15 years old. From original owner, and only ran a handful of times. Wondering what chassis parts are still available for this, where I can buy them if something breaks, etc. Anyone with experience?

Pretty much just ebay. Some hobby shops have random parts but they've mostly been putting them on ebay too. My friend runs one in 17.5 tc, he breaks body posts and melted one diff but overall they're very tough.

Considering the lifecycle of today's modern TC designs, parts support after 5 years tends to be very weak at best for most platforms. Parts for this chassis will be more difficult to find than your current offerings; unless you're planning oni using the car very sparingly, I'd buy a newer model...

Thanks. I should add that there are several aluminum upgrades already on the car, including the CV shafts, motor mount, front bumper, shocks. I plan to use it a lot, but not for competition, just for fun. I'm super careful with my stuff, and although I plan to push it to it's limits, I'm a careful driver. My "somewhat" LHS has old parts, not sure about what models they are for. What are the common things that break on these cars?

The Pro 2 is pretty durable with the exception that the drivetrain will not take too kindly to modern mod power. Even 17.5 may add some wear and tear and expect to rebuild the ball diff a bit more often. I have a Pro 2 that I am restoring (when I get around to it).

21.5 and VTA should be okay for the car.

It will handle 17.5 power fine. Just check the ball diffs every couple batteries and make sure they aren't loose. Not sure if anyone has tried putting in gear diffs from a sprint 2 but the layout is the same and they might fit. You could always lock the rear diff and get a front one way for drifting. The aluminum cvd's will most likely give you issues though. I would put some steel ones in.

If I get it, I was thinking about dropping in the Onyx 3930kv brushless set that I have in my CEN Mini madness. Would the drivetrain be able to handle that? Also, what material is the drivetrain made of? Composite?

Also, what would a fair price be for this? Again, in great shape, only used 3 times (no competition), 2 sets of wheels and tires (new tires), new painted body, Novak Dually ESC with Trinity 11 turn mod motor, high speed high torque steering servo. All it needs is a radio.

That should be pretty fast. Is that a 550 or 540 can? You might have issues with it touching the belt if it's 550. The drivetrain consists of a metal lays haft with two plastic pulleys, two belts and two diffs which are plastic. The diff outdrives might be graphite. Four cvd's, one at each corner with.

Go on ebay and see what similar ones have sold for. But at the end of the day it's worth what your willing to pay.

The car has a 540 can on it. My brushless set up on the Mini Madness is a 540 can as well.
It's very local to me so I may check it out in person...ad was posted online. I've seen such varied prices for these lol, but I agree with your last statement.

So I'm picking the Pro 2 up today, throwing my brushless setup in, and taking it to the hockey rink.

My dad occasionally runs a pro 2.

It handles just fine and is a well balanced car.

The drivetrain isn't really suitable for today's motors. The pins on the layshaft break for fun.

On his last outing he put a gear diff in from an old Sport 2 and it seemed ok.

The biggest issue with it is working on the thing. It's a hell of a lot of work just to get the diffs out.

Working on the car is of no issue to me. I can pull apart my real car in no time lol, so an R/C is considered leisurely for me haha. Also found a cheap spare chassis that I'll probably get for spare parts. Or use as a "beater" (although neither are going to be competitively raced).

I picked up the car yesterday, put my brushless setup in, and wow, what a fun little car! The combination of the motor and belt drive make it sound like a turbo spooling up. Pictures to come.

Nice. Just a heads up there is a guy on eBay selling old stock carbon graphite a-arms for the Pro 2 for around $13. They are well worth stocking up on.

It's a great car so have fun with it!
