Default Getting back into racing, maybe...

So a visit to the local indoor track has me thinking about getting back into racing, mind you just on the club level. My favorite class to race is TC, however it is a little different now. My last year racing it was foam tires and 13.5 brushless lipo, now it is rubber tires and 17.5 blinky. So... I need a setup. Now, for offroad I use Team Associated, for TC, I used XRAY, but I have a guy at the track that wants to sell me a Durango TC. I am going to assume that the Tekin RS pro I still have will work for the speedo, but I will need a motor and batteries. I do have a reedy 50c 5600 lipo still, but I don't know how strong it is. Also, cost is a concern. I don't want to break the bank. So, if I could get some suggestions on:

Car
Motor
Battery
Tires
Body

And try to keep the total under $500.

Thanks for your time and replies.

Under 500 is likely not going to happen.

Car used xray t4 14 - 250 (should be lots available soon with the 15 releasing any day)
Motor - 90 (team scream, r1 wurks, orca rx3)
Battery - 55 (smc 7200)
tires - 30 (spec tire for your track/event, or jaco green or blue depending on traction level)
body - 25 (mazda speed 6 for carpet, or ltcr for asphalt)

Maybe I need to clarify, the car can be used. What model cars should I be looking at in the used range. Unless everything has gone crazy, a lipo and motor should be able to be got for $200 or less, right? If I can pick up a roller for around $300, then it is just tires and a body...

Thank you. How are SMC pack now a days. I remember using them when they first came out with the hard cases, everyone at my track had them puff up really bad.

Dont forget about the $75+ transponder youll need unless you already have one.

As far as a good used kit for under $300, there are plenty out there. Associated 6.1/6.2. X-ray T4 13/14. Those are going to be your most popular and easiest to find parts and support for. Then there is the VBC D06. Great car and can get a used one for under $300, but parts are really only available online and getting set-up help at the track may be difficult.

$250 for a used T4'14? I think you are being a little optimistic. Just my opinion though. A good roller I would say will be closer to $350 to $400. Good is pretty subjective though. And I am very picky on what I buy. Which is why I don't buy used very often. But it all depends on condition etc. A car that's been run on asphalt will cost a little less due to chassis wear for example.

You could buy a tc6.1 from tower hobbies for $250 with a coupon. Its a great car. And then you could buy a savox 1252 from ebay for $50. And smc batteries are good. I prefer r1 wurks but the lowest ive seen them is $70. And lot of have been using the hobbywing juststock esc at my loca track. I personally had one an i think they work great. Only like $50-60.

New Sakura XI sport or Spec-R S2 kit: around 115-130, depends on where you source it.

Motor: Trackstar 17.5 from Hobbyking, around $40 shipped, try ebay or Hobby King. Roar legal.

Battery: Does your track require ROAR legal packs? If not, there are lots of affordable packs... try ebay or again Hobby King. Shipped prices around $30-40 bucks.

You have an esc.

Tires: Do you have to run a spec tire? Either way look to spend around $25-40.

Shell: Around $30

Used PT: around $65-75

Those are some budget options, will get you going for under $500. As for a chassis, either of the options listed will be good to get going with. Or maybe a used Xray T3 (11-12 spec), should be able to find one around $150-170. I wouldn't jump right on that Durango, the few I've seen locally seem to break pretty fast.

You didn't mention if you needed a servo. Savox 1251 will be affordable new or used.

So... If guess what I need to ask is what car would be the best, not being the latest and greatest? How far back is still competitive with the xray? 11, 12, 13? If have servos, I'm even have a takin red line 17.5 and a viper 17.5. Also have a reedy 5600 50c lipo, and a personal transponder that will work or the track's new system, have 2 mrts as well that I'm may trade in. Maybe I'll should just get the car and stick with my old electronics until the driving comes back to me. But, there is pretty much a zero chance of buying new this year as I'm am not positive that I'm will be putting as much into this as I'm used to.

Xray T3 11 or 12 is a good chassis and can be found relatively cheap. All of your electronics and motors should be fine. If your track has not upgraded to the RC4 decoder, the MRT PTs will work fine.
Have fun racing...again.

I would stick with the T3 '12 or newer.

The trackstar from hobbyking is a good motor for very little money. GensAce are really good batteries for the money but are sometimes hard to get. They sell out fast. People around here have had really good luck with the Hobbywing Juststock esc and they are a very good esc for the price. I think it is very doable to get a car running for $500. Good luck and have fun.

Okay, now for stating the obvious.

Why not go down to your track and see what's supported there (and most people race).

If you don't want to be on your own, you know what with all that on-a-shoestring budget and all?

Or if you don't care, get the BD7RS. New - 175$ plus shipping out of HK. Yokomo will have out a new version soon and parts are interchangeable so supply should keep plentiful.

Well above average Joe's abilities, hence way underrated.
