In order to get there with a 96T, you will need to grind the motor tower a bit.
Here's a pic of the area to grind.
Attachment 1225616
You only need to grind out the area where the pinion will touch the tower. Its actually a fairly narrow area and the screw attaching the motor bulkhead does not pass deep enough into the area you grind.

I've already ground mine out so I couldn't tell you what will fit without grinding. If I remember correctly though I don't think you'll even be able to hit 4.0 on the FDR with a 96 spur. Hopefully a fix is on the way for larger spur pinion combos. I think the US is the only place we really use the larger combos.

We have already spoken to ARC and they have looked at the situation. From Europe and Asia, where they have had a bigger following until recently (thanks everyone!!!), they don't see 17.5 classes, so they were not aware of the gearing situation. But they will be working it out shortly for the future. They have always been quick to respond to ideas and feedback.

So I guess 143tooth count (47+96) would be the pinion/spur combo limit.
My next issue is to find out how close can the motor get to the spur...
Would be nice if there was a gearing range chart with this motor mount.
The only way they can offer a fix is to give us a redesigned tower...
I read on some asian racing forum, and the general consensus is that boosted is the way to go. Where did this split happen?

Don't think it was officially announce in here ----
ARC will be a proud sponsor at Scotty Ernst's IIC event in Las Vegas this year. Anyone driving an ARC car at the event can come by and pick up a race support package from us. Meet the factory engineers and the US support staff.
ARC will also be have factory drivers from Europe and Asia attending the event as well. To help work on set ups and show how well the car can work on carpet.
Also expect to see many of the ARC USA team drivers attending the event as well!!

This car...
What can I say? It continues to be the most consistent car I've used yet. Transitions through chicanes, predictability...everything I throw at it...doesn't blink.
Raced on a very wide open track this last weekend and the car was flawless...my driving, not so much lol. The car is really picking up a following up here in the Pacific Northwest and people aren't looking back. The car took 1st and 3rd in 17.5 blinky and 2nd in our slightly modified version of VTA. These people haven't been racing the car long and it still performs well.
Putting together my Black Edition this week, I'll try and throw some pics up from the build process when I'm done.

Got my black edition in today. The box was nice and small.
Started on the usual chassis prep, sanded the CF edges and CA'd the bottom plate.
The diff went together smoothly, but did some adjustments on it.
1. The sun gear, as noted on the instructions in petitrc, sanded to 4.18mm. The gears were 4.20, 4.22 out of the bag. Be sure to carve off any flashing.
2. The plastic cross pin may need to be sanded a bit to make the gears spin smoothly.
3. The large diff shim has a rounded and a straight side. Put the rounded side facing up. There are some sharp flashings on the shim too. Sand it down to make it smooth.
After doing these steps, I got a super smooth diff. The precision is top notch, one of the best I've built.
Will be working on shocks next.

I am planning on adding the low friction belts and pulleys to further reduce drag. car is very predictable and very smooth.
